Engine rpm going to 3-4k when applying brakes.

I have posted this in the Explorer section but figured I'd post here as well.

I've got a 96 Explorer (4.0 V6) with around 227,000 miles on it. I have a problem that I only see when I drive it 37 miles to go fishing. I don't see the problem driving around town. When I get to the lake and apply my brakes to slow down I notice my tach will rev up to 2k-3k which makes it tough to stop. If I put it in neutral the tach really shoots up. It seems that if I pump the gas a few times it settles down. I had this problem a year or two ago and for the life of me I can't remember if I took it to the shop or if it just went away. Any help appreciated

does it have cruise control, and do you use it while driving to the lake?

Re: Engine rpm going to 3-4k when applying brakes.

are you pressing the gas pedal with the side of your foot accidentally?
its happened before.

id guess its because of your boots being wider than your normal shoes

Good point. I am wearing big ole cold weather boots. I'll have to pay attention next time.

Yes, I do have cruise control but was not using it.

i think i remember someone having the same problem once before on the forums.
there was also a few car talk shows about someone hitting the gas and the brakes at the same time by accident.

i doubt that would cause the rpms to go up to 4k at all. let alone for the whole time he is on the brakes.

Well, I'm feeling pretty dumb. Went fishing Saturday and paid extra attention to keeping my foot on the brake only and sure enough, no problem. My boots are a lot wider than my other shoes.
