305 Questions

Hello Hello, Just bought myself a FJ45 Toyota Landcruiser with a 305 in her. It's got ARB Air Diff lockers front and rear, lift kit, extended shackels, disc breaks, dual batteries etc....

My problem being im new to the V8 world, I know a fair bit about import turbo cars. Anyway, chit chat aside.

When crawling through bush slowly or if i let idle for to long after a run the temp gets right up there and starts boiling in the overflow bottle. It's just got the standard clutch fan in, i believe it had a thermo in favour of the clutch fan but the guy who owned the car before me said that didnt work to well. Just wondering if i need some better setup thermo or somhing, maybe new thermostat? Also, it's an auto.. is there a strong enough manual gearbox that bolts up to the 305 still retaining 4wheel drive? The 305 sounds verry lumpy and it has crow cam stickers on the air cleaning, all the other stickers of products that are on the car (the gear is actually on the car) so im pretty sure its got a set of cams. When the motor was last looked at by a mechanic he said the heads are shaved to there limits, what heads would you recomend i use. It has pretty desent torque, it chirps 1st,2nd,3rd on the highway and thats with 33inch muddies.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Clint

Re: 305 Questions

update, i think the clutch fan blades were on back to front. It wasnt blowing wind into the radiator, it was pushing it backwards to the motor. So i turnt it around and now it seems to be getting pushed into the radiator. hope it helps with my overheating.

Still need to know about a good head setup.

Re: 305 Questions

you can put 96-97 chevy truck l31 vortec cast iron heads on a chevy 305 and make good torque and horsepower.but to do that youll also need a different intake manifold, they bolt right up.if that 305 is older than an 87 youll also need self-aligning rocker arms and centerbolt valve covers.hope that helps.

Re: 305 Questions

The "601" head is also a good choice. It's the "305HO" head. Due to the bore size, using a head with an intake valve larger than 1.84" will yeild less performance than the stock valve size. Since your desire is for more low-end power, the smaller runners of the 305 heads are also desired. The Vortecs, while great performance heads, are a little too "big" for this application.

Throw away that "high performance" cam (only 1 in a pushrod V8) and get an "RV" cam (made for torque, not high-end power). We like Comp, but others have good grinds as well. XE256H would be my first choice. DEH255H would be second.

An Edelbrock Performer intake and a small (600 CFM) Holley would really wake it up. If you have a well-built Q-Jet, that's a great choice, too. Small headers (1 1/2" tube) are also called for.

Re: 305 Questions

Thanks mate, im not sure exactly what cam is in it. I might be able to find out from the bloke who built it. Yeah its got a Quadrajet on her. I get 250kms to 60L tank.. not to good huh... also, with the over heating. I turnt the clutch fan blades around cause it was blowing air onto the motor, not the radiator.. seems to be working good now, and took out the thermostat. Its really hot here everyday anyway..
