1995 Pontiac Grand Prix

I am looking at possibly purchasing a 95 GP with 161 on it for $500 the car is in great shape, was babied , has alot of work done to it but the only issue is, it needs to have the trans replaced. I was wondering how hard would it be for sumone to do this in there garage, as in the overall time table, the tools that would needed and on a difficulty level from 1-10 where would it rank? I wouldn't mind doing this myself with a friend since i know a few things here and there , but he's really knowledge with working on cars so i trust his judgment.

Please just give me info, pictures of a this process would help too, thanks

Re: 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix

oh man, its a bigger job than one might think. especially working on the garage floor this time of year.

The motor has to be held in by at least one motor hook. Then you need to remove the front subframe. From there its pretty straight forward. Unbolt the torqu converter bolts, push the converter in the tranny all the way. Then remove the bell housing bolts with the trans supported, and it comes out the bottom.

Assembly is in reverse order. Make sure to have an alignment after you put that subframe back in.

Re: 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix

Since this is a Michigan car, undercarriage rust will probably cause the subframe mounting bolts to snap off. Doing it on the ground, and trying to get the car safely high enough for clearance is another hurdle. This would put this job in the 8.5-to 9 out of 10 range for difficulty IMO.

Re: 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix

I'm just going to pass up on the car, it isn't rusted at all actually though took a look it's in new like condition inside and out and the undercarriage is no different. I believe he told me it was NC car prior to being brought here ...

Thanks for the help guys i really appreciate it.
