Ignition Key won't come out sometimes
91 Automatic. Last winter I noticed there were times when it was very cold (below freezing) that the Ignition key would not come out of the switch. It didn't do it all summer but now that it is cold again, it is doing the same thing. I started using the spare key thinking the key could be worn out and the spare key also sticks. I have sprayed WD -40 into the lock and graphite but it hasn't helped it. I also checked to make sure the selonoid on the shifter is releasing. Any ideas short of replacing the lock assembly?

Sounds like the tumblers in the cylinder are getting worn.

Re: Ignition Key won't come out sometimes
Try turning the key further back than normal and actually letting it go before you pull on it.. most times, if you add pressure to the lock cylinder, it won't do anything for years... then when it starts to wear, it will feel like the tumblers are "grabbing" the key, and it will stick a bit.. mine does it too, just let go of the key for a sec before pulling it out, and you should be fine.

Re: Ignition Key won't come out sometimes
you should be able to drive down to your local lock shop. spend 5 mins pulling it out. they should be able to rebuild it for $20-ish. put it back in and drive home.
you could pull it at home and leave it hanging while you drive there...i would rather pull it after i got there

Re: Ignition Key won't come out sometimes
heh, i just decided to delete the keyswitch all together.. adding an engine start button and a set of throws for the acc/on circuits.
Since I don't have a head unit anyway, and the stereo plan actually calls for an audio interface where the ashtray used to be, I'll just put a switch panel in the DIN slot. |
