Aussie V8 SC race toon (WIP)

Just started on this one aftering watching the Bathurst 1000 on SPEED.
Luv watching this race series, wish we had better coverage here in the states.
Lots of graphics/detailing on these cars, which will drive me crazy.

rexsins--you might notice that Lowndes is leading Kelly in this layout,
but I do have another sketch with the order reversed.

Re: Aussie V8 SC race toon (WIP)

Thanks for the looking at it.

Yep, I do watch SPEED and Pinks (it's a drag racing type of reality TV show).
Some of the episodes have been filmed at MIR which is just an hour away from me.

Added more detailing to the Falcon and decided to drop some of the sponsors--just too much detailing.
Seeing as it's a toon, I can control my world.
It still needs a roll cage and door handles, then on to Kelly's Holden.

Did Lowndes swap brands after Ambrose came to the states?

That turned out really nice! I like your linework and graphics. Those wheels are awesome. I know what you mean about the car ad spam. I am working on a stockcar and the decals are insane. They really screw up the form of the car. I will end up spending more time on them than the rest of the car.

When you make an exact copy of a car, you draw graphics directly on a car with the pen tool. That is totally drawing them over and over again. Every line. The besier curve is not faster or easier than pencil linework, it is just completely editable and very precise. The only part that is faster is the painting with the airbrush tool. Once you draw what is the linework and "frisket", the painting is fast as hell. Very much like an airbrush painting is faster than CP.

The program I use has a pen tool called the "B-spline" For me, it's
much easier to use than what the program calls a "Bezier pen" tool.
I do luv using "ctrl+Z" to undo that last vector line, when it's not right.

Started work on Kelly's Holden...

That looks great! The colors really pop. The vector linework adds alot to the drawings.
I use that extra top secret vector drawing tool only available in cs3 that draws the whole damn thing for me while I kick back and drink coffee.
The button looks like a coffee cup.
I first saw Bsplines in 3dsmax. They are really very similar to the pen tool. I never got used to them though..

Re: Aussie V8 SC race toon (WIP)

Thanks, funny how we seem to develop a favored vector drawing tool.
I also do the coloring in the same vector program too.

(Wish I had that super-secret drawing tool in E3, it would save a lot of time redrawing my pencil sketches.) lol

Did a bit more on the Holden...

Re: Aussie V8 SC race toon (WIP)

oh

as you do more of these collect sponsor logos.

find them wherever you can. Places like http://www.brandsoftheworld.com has tons...all vector.

In Illustrator you can take a sraight on logo and apply a gradient mesh to it and wrap it around whtever you want. If you choose a large mesh you get great control.

just sharin

Re: Aussie V8 SC race toon (WIP)

Thanks for the comments. I do like getting a few more eyes on a bigger design like this one,
as sometimes I get too close and tend to overlook some areas.

Yep, got to do more shading on both and noticed that I haven't done the wheel wells either on the Falcon.

I've been think about speed lines, blur effect, some of both or even no effect, like a photo freeze capture.
Once I build a background, I'll try out some ideas.

That's a great link for logos, use it often.
Somebody pointed me to that site a few years ago, might even have been you.

Expresssion also has a "Make Warp Group" tool and I used that to rough in the basic contours of the logo text and then converted the text to paths so
I could add nodes and reshape each letter "object" separately to match the fender shape.
It's a slow process, but gets the look I want.
