How many are formally educated?

Just curious how many posting drawing went to art school.
Myself, I went to school for architecture and drafting. hey I figured where I live it would be easier to find work.

Re: How many are formally educated?

I've never had any art classes in my life. Everything I've drawn were self-taught. I took art classes in high school but they don't count since the teacher never taught anything, but basics such as lines and paint. No real challenge or new things learned from that.

I'm currently a 5th year Graphic Design major, but most likely I will graduate with a degree that I won't use as a career because I'm planning to go to another college for Radiology and get a job at some hospital. =O

My main direction in high school was economy, i graduaded college with a majoy in management and i want to get my MBA in the next 2 years so i never had anything with art in school. But you're only a year older than me. I don't see why we can't get any art classes in our own time. Besides, i don't see being self-thought as a disadvantage. It even gives us an advantage over everyone else if we ever deside to persue art and take courses. I know some gallery holders here who never had any real training. But trying out things for yourself is a way of learning too. You don't need a diploma do be a good artist.

Re: How many are formally educated?

^ I wasn't saying anything negative about getting a degree that I won't use. I'm just saying I won't be using it fully since I'm already planning to go into Radiology in the future. Of course there will be times where I will eventually work for a design firm or whatnot. I'm just simply stating what I've been through. Being self-taught is a great challenge and a gift.

I've paid $350 per months for two months at some art academy/design school and the instructors didn't seem to know what they're talking about.
So I really learned nothing from that.

I'm not bitter at anything at all as some of you guys think.

Re: How many are formally educated?

Don't waste your money on an art degree. I have one, it has not helped me in any way. It was like tossing about $40k in the wind. Just my 2 cents.

Lemorris what is your day job? You mentioned you draw crap. This kind?

Re: How many are formally educated?

I work for a medical informations systems company.

We make software applications that run hospitals worldwide.

My duties include creating fully interactive online training complete with demonstartions and system simulations. I also do instructional graphics, product marketing, user convention themes and graphics, videos for internal and external use and just about anything media related they throw my way.

It's cool bcause I stay real busy and then when I get home I get to fall back into my little car world and just relax doing something I enjoy.

I apologize for violating protocol with Xspeed earlier...I thought it would spur discussion. It really is fascinating to me how the graphic art world works. There are countless opportunities and it's just amazing to see where your art takes you. When I was in art school I never thought that I would join the Navy afterwards and then be assigned to a helicopter squadron and then by some dumb luck get an interbiew at an Aerospace company that happened to make laser systems for the helo the Navy trained me on, which lead to me getting my first real job as a graphic artist and that put me on a really decent career path.

It's the unstructured beauty in life that influences the arts IMO and to me it's cool to ponder those kinds of things.
WHat will formal training do for you?...nothin....what can you make any form of training do for you?...everything.

That's some crazy stuff right there.

once again, my apologies...I'll sink back into the....

Re: How many are formally educated?

I did one 4 year during study which is called "industrial design". After that I worked for one year as a designer in a plastic factory.

And now I study Industrial Product Design at a dutch university.

And about drawing..i think i allways had drawing at school, but i never really learned any drawing at school, cause i was allways thurder than the rest. for me it's just practising and looking at forums like this how the 'pros' do it allways handy.

greets Robert

Damn that sounds like a cool job. I remember seeing some of your photoshop tutes linked on here awhile ago. It doesn't surprise me at all to see you are getting paid to do similar stuff. You are good at at.

Re: How many are formally educated?

In Elementary school I hated art class. I never like ppl/teachers/instructors try'n to push their style and techniques on me. High school the same. I attended art class for a yr or deux. Only 4 the credits. Vocational I did 3 years in CAD. I also took a correspondence course thru "The Art Institute of Pittsburgh". b4 the popularity of the Internet. Never finished it tho.
