Scale Motorsport's Plain Weave Carbon Fibre
I heard from somebody that the spraying-through-a-mesh method does not work, but SMS's Plain Weave Carbon Fibre looks just like that. So Actually, is the mesh method ok?

Personally, I quite like the look of the SMS C/F decals, I use it whenever is appropriate with very satisfying results.
SMS aren't the only manufacturer of the C/F decal though, Renaissance make it too with a darker grey to it, as do a few otheres. I think the spray through mesh method doesn't look at all realistic though. Here is a photo of where I am using the C/F decal on my Safari Impreza, which is not far from finished: ![]() You can see I used it on the snorkel pipe and you can also see some on the interior door panel, I think it adds to the realism of the model. If is a mesh...it's not carbon fiber. Drop the idea and invest those c/f if you want it to look like one, if not just spray semi-gloss black.
SMS carbon fiber and BBR Carbon fiber are both best so far. |

i've been working on a Tamiya Jaguar XJR-9LM lemans car for a while now, and have been using the spray through a nylon method on a lot of the underpanels, and it works quite well.
I shoot first with semi-flat black, then shoot gunmetal metallizer through a nylon that has been very carefully placed and formed so i get the pattern i like. I like going the nylon route on the undersides, because the 'mesh' on a the underside of carbon fiber (at least the carbon fiber on the car i'm doing) is very small (a grid of like 1/4" squares), the decals by scale motorsport, the grids are scale to like 1" squares, which is way too big.. plus, the color difference is very subtle... just enough to look real, but not too much to look phoney. |
