Question: Painting Pulleys

How do you guys paint the belt and pulley systems when they come in one piece, and the pulleys have to be painted silver? I normally paint the silver first (lighter colour first) and then attempt to get a nice even amount of flat black onto the belts with a small detail brush. The results are never as nice as I could wish. In particular, in a lot of tight spots, say if the belt loops 180 degrees around a small pin/idler pulley, and you want to paint inside that tight spot, you often end up hitting the idler pulley. Do you cheat and not paint this part?

Fortunately, the belt often gets tucked up behind a bunch of other stuff, so you never see it, but it would be nice to know how to get a nice finish on it.
