Engine Swap

I recently replaced my 2.5l non turbo engine in my 91 daytona after the last one threw 2 rods. After about a week the second engine which was a dodge aries block and my daytona rebuilt head began to make the same knocking as the one before. I am looking into buying a new engine but was hoping that I could switch my 2.5l to a 3.0 V6 that was in the 91 daytona IROC's. I have a 3 speed automatic transmission but didn't know if everything would bolt up right or if I need some kind of engine kit or transmission adapter? Any help would be really appreciated.

well never just what a mechanic says. Turns out the sound of what I was told was a rod going out was just a piece of thin metal hitting the flywheel because the torc bolts had come lose. However if anyone has some helpful info on switching the engines over it would be helpful for the future because I do plan on eventually doing that.

The 3.0L wouldn't bolt up to your transmission. I would suggest the 2.2L Turbo II setup or the 2.2L Turbo IV "VNT." These two are very reliable and fast, trust I drive one. You will also need an intercooler if you get one of these. The nice thing is that the engine will bolt right to your transaxle and engine mounts.

2.5L is good

First of all, my opinion is that the 2.5 is the ultimate engine for any first generation chrysler built front wheel drive car. The 3.0 is not bad, but it is a foreign engine in an American car. The best way to get more performance out of your car is to switch to a manual tranny. I think I would rather bolt in a turbocharged 4 cylinder motor and tackle a tranny swap than rewire the whole darn car to accept the mitsu motor, there is so much involved. Of course if you go w/ the mitsu, you could always slap in the complete engine package from a stealth r/t or 300GT SL, only prob is you'd have to rework the exhaust to match up to the different manifold (doing this swap alone can net you another 20hp) and really get inventive with the wiring. I think the foreign motor route is great if you want to build a to-the-max all out performance sleeper, but the turbo 4 is a better way to go and you can keep your auto tranny (you will want to beef it up like crazy and go easy on it). What I would love to see is a 2.2 turbo IV with a 2.5 turbo crankshaft. The turbo IV puts out some serious low-end torque and that long stroke from the 2.5 is in its prime creating grunt at low rpms! Oh, and that manny will get you better mileage as well as quicker 0-60 times, especially w/ a smaller motor.

Just my thoughts!

one more thing, the 4 speed auto that bolts to the mitsu motor may sound sweet, but under performace and high-mileage conditions leaves a lot to be desired in terms of durability. they did make a modified 3spd to fit the mitsu engine blocks (before the slush box 4 was introduced) based off the A-413 tranny (what you got in your car right now) that can make use of most of the performance parts and tricks that fit the normal tranny. the only real difference in the design occurs at the end that mates to the engine (outer shell is different length/shape, internal parts, bolt pattern, etc)

have fun...

no way

A 3.0 mitsu has only 180lbs-ft of torque, not much more than a turbo II/IV and well less than a DOHC turbo III. The 568 will hold together behind a 300-400hp monster motor and the 543 for the mitsu is basically a 568 w/ a different bellhousing (to bolt to the v6 engine)

You must have a clitch w/ your tranny, or improper maintainance, high mileage, wear and tear, etc. If you rebuild the tranny right and take care of it, it should last a long time. McLeod makes the best clutches for our cars, they will take more than the engine can dish out!
