I'm just wondering if the MT/R's wear out faster than the TSL's? Also, I need to know if the MT/R's are louder than the TSL's.

No, and no. MTRs are quieter and wear much better.

I'm currently running 31x10.5x15's TSL and they are so loud on the road and great offroad. I wanted to replace them with the MT/R's and just wondering if they're loud on the road and how's the wear and tear on them. I want to find this out before I purchase them considering how much they cost.

I have two friends running them. One has 30k on them and more than 50% life on them.
Low noise and good wet traction (relative) This summer I am getting a set of 31-10.5r15 for 100.00 ea

Hey Lance thanks for the reply. Whenever my little daughter rides in the back seat she always ask if there are bees running after us. I tell her that there are a couple of them stuck of the wheels. Anyhow, $100 per tire for the 31's, that's not bad. I'm thinking of putting on 32's but noticed that they're priced at $140 per tire, not sure what website I saw them at.

since i've only put 4k miles on the mtr's i cannot notice the wear yet, and the noise is more of a rrrrrrrrrrrrrr at speeds under 25mph, i have my windows up most the time with the air on, at hwy speeds i really cannot hear any road noise but whatever you do make sure you get these tires balanced correctly and from what I was told never put "equal" into these tires for whatever reason (I think that's the name of the product) supposedly truckers use it in there tires and it's starting to carry over into other vehicles. and boy do these tires spit mud,, the side lugs are awesome at self-cleaning by the way.

I recently got a set of 32X11.50X15 MT/R's. I'm pleasantly surprised at how quiet they are on the road. They have a slight humm a low speed, but it seems to pretty much disappear at highway speeeds. I bought an extra set of stock tires and wheels for street use, but probably could have just run these tires full time. I don't know how they wear as I haven't put enough miles on them. I suspect that they might get louder as they wear a bit.

ScottG, did you have to raise the torsion bars to accommodate the 32's or did you just left it alone? What other trimming did you do to eliminate some rubbing? If I remember correctly last I spoke to Todd (EOE) if I'm to change my 31 TSL to 32's I have to trim the inner part of the wheel well. Not just where the Mud guards used to be attached but also towards going up along the side.

I only trimmed the front wheel well plastic where the mud flap used to attach. I did not need to do any other trimming. I plan to get stiffer torsion bars at some point, but for now I haven't touched the torsion bars. I haven't experienced any rubbing, but I also haven't done any serious offroading yet with the new tires. I don't expect them to rub anywhere except the fuel filler line in the rear, which is harmless.
Keep in mind that Super Swampers run a little larger than most other brands. I wouldn't be surprised if a 32" TSL is a half inch taller than a 32" MT/R. |

Thanks for the info fellas. I'm done with the TSL's. My truck sounds like a Bomber while I'm cruising. From what I gather from everyone's reply I'm more leaning towards the MT/R's. They're a bit pricey but will last longer than the TSL's. The only complain I have with the TSL's besides being too loud on the road is that they wear fast.

to update the mtr's
so far no noticable uneven wear patterns. only complaint is they seem to be either throwing weights or something i mean i've never had offroad tires that needed to be balanced so often. i bought them in jan. of 2003 and have had them balanced 4 times so far all free at the Goodyear that i bought them at, and every time a different tech has said something to the effect of "these tires are way off" the only noticable prob would be at around 70-75mph the steering wheel shakes pretty bad, which has been my clue to get back in there and get a rebalance and rotation, after which they are smooth again. i've checked steering components and for mud on the insides of the rims but even after cleaning them spotless it would do no good till the rebalance. oh well i love the grip they give off road. i took my stock x tires up to West Jefferson N.C. last year and went off road with my brother-in-laws and there jeeps, the trails were wet and i slid all over the place when going downhill at almost a crawl, last month i went back up to visit and went to the same trails for the exact reason of testing them against the former, they performed like a champ in fact i was suprised my brother-in-law Bobby is using them on his wrangler although they are 35" mtr's he said they are great. i love them down here in the sand in florida which is where i am most of the time but if you are planning on a road trip balance them first. |
