Temerature Gauge Not Working

92, Chevy, K2500, 350, Auto
Recently bought this truck as a second truck so i dont know much about the history. What i do know is that my temperature gauge is not working. The gauge will move from extreme cold to extreme hot when the wire is grounded. On the sensor itself there are two prongs i am not for certain which one the wire is supposed to go to.One of the prongs is slightly longer and flatter than ther other. the original connector to the sensor is not there so i have no idea what it should look like. all i have it one wire and the sensor on the side of the block. (I think its a green wire) how is this supposed to be hooked up? how do i know if the sensor itself is bad?

Re: Temerature Gauge Not Working

By grounding the wire (and having the guage move), you have confirmed that the sensor is bad. I've never seen one with two prongs on it. If you havn't already, try connecting the wire to both...? Otherwise the sensor is bad.

Re: Temerature Gauge Not Working

Normally, the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor in the intake manifold has 2 prongs. That sensor is only for the ECM and is not used for the gauge. If it is not hooked up, you are wasting a lot of fuel and can even cause oil to wash off the rings are ruin the engine.

The sensor for the gauge (green wire) should be in the drivers side cylinder head.

yes, the sensor on the intake is plugged in and working. ( the one near the thermostat) i have looked at some of the sensors online and it looks like mine is missing the plastic connector on the end of it. the part where the wire and its connector would plug into.

Re: Temerature Gauge Not Working

Does this look like the right connector? http://198.208.187.182/internet/Part...cpartnbr=PT728

Any Acdelco parts store should be able to get it or online at www.rockauto.com

Re: Temerature Gauge Not Working

yeah, thats what it used to look like. I did just pick up a coolant temp sensor at a local oreillys store. when i looked at the sensor i noticed it had two prongs where you would plug the wire connector in. I checked with another store to make sure that was the right part and they said its the same part for both of the coolant temp sensors. does that sound right to anybody?
