Off Model Question
I have a '93 Geo Metro and a '93 Geo Tracker 4WD.
Just wanted to ask folks on this Forum if they have experience. I'm posting on the Tracker Forum. It is snowing here in Washington State's East side of late! My right side Tracker HUB won't lock in. The selector goes to "Lock", but doesn't make the connection. ![]() Questions: 1. Is there some way to "bash" it to make it lock in? 2. How hard is it to take such a Hub apart to fix it? 3. Are hubs easily changed out with another used hub? It has probably Never been opened and cleaned/greased.... DoctorBill

Re: Off Model Question
its not that hard to take it apart and grease it. if you have a manual it will show you how to take it apart. how do you know its not locking in, neither one of the front axles will get power if one side isn't locked. usually its the auto hubs that stick, not the manual ones

Re: Off Model Question
I had the Clutch replaced over a year ago and hadn't had the Tracker worked on
since then. Two days ago, in deep snow, the vehicle had no traction in 4WD. Useless! The front wheels did not turn in 4WD - my wife watched. I took it to the Clutch Shop today because I thought they hadn't reconnected the front drive shaft properly (maybe?). The mechanic checked and said one of the Hubs was not making connection when it was on the "Lock" position - thus no front drive as you said... I am assuming he is correct and that the Right Hub (which needs a pliers to turn) is the culprit. Looking thru Threads on the TRACKER Forum, I see that if the Hubs aren't lubed every year or two, that they corrode. We haven't had the Hubs looked at in several years and I'd bet the previous owner didn't lube them either! So it is an educated guess..... Do you know of any web sites that would have an exploded view of the manual Hubs on the '93 Geo Tracker ? The Chilton Manual (meagre explanations) shows a small diagram of the Samurai manual Hubs - but none for the GEO hubs. Would the Geo and Samurai Trackers have the same manual hubs ???? I'm trying to understand how the Hub works - having trouble seeing the Chilton Diagram Page 7-37 (fig 109). Very small for these old eyes.... Once apart, I plan to HOSE the hub with WD-40 to clean it out, then apply regular grease to the moving parts and close it up. Planning to take pictures as I do it and show them here as per usual for me. I bought a set of TORX bits at Harbor Freight today to do it. Are those six TORX HEAD bolts hard to get loose? DoctorBill

Re: Off Model Question
I looked yesterday in the parking lot. Several difficulties....
Bad eyes w/o reading glasses. Lot of dirt and debris on them. T30 fits, but I have Allen Head Bits also. Edit - 12-13-07 - You are right CREVTT69 ! They are Allen head. Fixed Photo! DB They are coming off one way or the other..... Just concerned they'll stick - Liquid Wrench. Once off, what is under the cover - any springs that will go flying!? Is this just a large helical screw type thing underneath that causes a ring gear to move in and out when the lock tab is rotated ? If so, probably lots of dirt and corrosion. As usual, things will need cleaning and lubricating. Most things slip and slide much better with a little lubrication.... DoctorBill PS - It sure would be nice if the Tracker was made to go from FRONT WHEEL DRIVE (where most of the weight is) to 4WD instead of RWD to 4WD.... Go to Geo Tracker Forum - took them apart (photos as per usual). Thread - "Has anyone Opened up the 4WD Hubs and lubed them?" (12-6-07)
