MERCEDES-BENZ E320 CDi Avantgarde HELP

HI all

driving down the highway/motorway etc and weather really bad rain winds floods etc anyway was driving down this really dark country road and bang went straight though a 1 and a half foot flooded road merc went though it as i was driving about 80km i did notice that the car slowed right down going though it . well carried on driving but more sensible and when on the not so bad road i noticed a banging from underneath the car near my foot well so then stopped near by in a garage to see whats what. i looked under the Car and seen the exhaust in the middle had this metal mesh like surround around it and was very loose and vibrating badly and some rubber or plastic stuff near it was hanging of ummm seems like some thing as fell off but what and i also noticed in the car that the temp gauge went down to under 40c and that my heater in car wasn't as hot air as before pls help whats happed and is it a easy fix and what parts do i need.
