Re: s-10 back up lights

I have the same problem, I have been told that it could be wiring or something in the shifter that turns the light on. I yours auto or manual transmission? Mine is manual and a 1996.

Re: s-10 back up lights

there's a set of wires that plug into the trans check that connection for corrosion and clean if that dosen't solve the problem then it's a bad reverse switch

Re: s-10 back up lights

on the passenger side on the tail shaft. there are two plugs, one for your speed sensor, and one for your lights. sadly the switch is located inside the tranny. if it is not the plug, i would just get a good flashlight. it is not worth the trouble to take it apart.

one more question....i looked under my car at the tranny and i noticed 2 wires on the passenger side on the end close to the engine. is the tail shaft the end nead the driveshaft, or the engine?

Re: s-10 back up lights

driveshaft end. but if you notice there are two wires, i'm not sure right off hand which one it is, but the other is for your speedo. it won't hurt anything if you just checked it out while you are there. that is how i keep my truck from shutting off.....but that is another subject. they will be pretty close to your exhaust pipe. if i remember correctly they are the only two plugs on that side. hope that helps.

Re: s-10 back up lights

you could by-pass the switch with some wire and a push button switch and two light sockets so you can get the inspection sticker ( i was born and raised in NY ) and that is what i did with my monte carlo until i got the tranny work done and it is legal to do this

Re: s-10 back up lights

morning all, ihave a 97 s-10 manual shift. i have chaecked the lights, and replaced the switch in the tranny. for the guy above, it's the one in the front on the passenger side. still no lights when in reverse. anything i should be looking at next. it's starting to get cold here. i don't want to spend more time than i have too undernieth it if i don't have to. does anyone have a wiring diagram i could get a scan from?

Re: s-10 back up lights

well, if you are sure wich one the reverse light switch is, unplug it, and jumper the connector with a piece of wire and see if the lights come on. if so, then it's a problem with the switch or something inside tranny. if they don't light up, then is a problem with wiring and so on.

Re: s-10 back up lights

16th hippy, thank you, i tried this on my own in the afternoon. your solution works. i found out that there was just enough curorsion on the plug to stop the lights from coming on. i cleaned them and all is good. i hope this help some of the others out there.
