Exclamation 1987 5 Speed with NO Reverse Problem

I just bought a new project car that is a 87 GT V6 5-speed. It has a new clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel.

Gears one through five work awesome, but I have NO REVERSE.

I won't go all the way in reverse for nothing. It just barely touches the gear and then rakes BAD.

ANY IDEAS out there????

PLEASE HELP!!!

Jason

It could be as simple as a mis-adjusted cable, or as serious as trashed reverse gears.

Does the transmission shift into reverse with the engine off? Also, does it help if you shift into 5th, and then into reverse?

Re: 1987 5 Speed with NO Reverse Problem

Just hada similar problem. Make sure the nut that holds the shift lever on the transmission is tight. I was about to go adjust my cables when I noticed the nut (M-14x2x12.5) was missing completely. This apparently caused everything to be loose and it would not hold reverse. Once tightened on there, she works perfectly. Good luck!
