Porting the bitch!

Porting the turbo first thing in the morning *by first thing, i mean like 10:30 or 11am* (its 11pm Tuesday night) and Wednesday (tomorrow) I’m hitting it full force! Any words of advice? Tips? Hints? Wish me luck!

Re: Porting the bitch!

Can't stress enough to TAKE YOUR TIME AND GO SLOW!!! Remember, you cannot replace material that you have taken too much off of. Port, check, measure, port, check, measure, port, check, measure. By the time you're done you should have almost as much time in measuring and checking it over as you have actual porting time. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Did I say go slow?

Re: Porting the bitch!

Yeah, turbos are by far the biggest bitch to port, atleast on my 16g there was so much extra material to take out. Just go slow and check vfaq.com and/or tuners articles for porting advice.

Re: Porting the bitch!

well... i woke up this morning, and as planed i went straight to the garage… everything was going good, drained the coolant, oil, and removed the oil/water lines from the turbo, down pipe, ok so I got up and started to remove the Manifold2turbo bolts… well that wasn’t going to happen WTF? I got my breaker bar, and really gave some force… the bolt cracks loose! Awesome! One by one I break them loose, everything was GREAT! Perfect, no problems… until I realized that I had broken every one of the 4 bolts… F*ck! Well, I figured they would come out with a little PB blaster and some vice grips, so I continued working, and got the turbo out (after removing the ENTIRE manifold) unbolted the O2 housing… and removed the Exhaust housing from the rest of the turbo… well, hours went by, I used PB, Vice grips, Propane torch, and every combination of those three tools you can think of… the bolts wont budge. I’m waiting for a quote from slowboyracing.com to see what they will charge me for the port job, 34mm wastegate mod, and removal of the 4 broken studs… here’s some pictures of the F*ckage…

Then! I noticed that my wastegate cant open a full 90*… could this be a contributing factor to boost creep? Pics:

Sorry for the HUGE pics, but i want everyone to see how bad they really are stuck... look how tworn up the bolts are, the one that is real bad, i cut like that to give the Vice grips somewhere flat to get a bit on... but man, i've been fighting this thing like hell!

Re: Porting the bitch!

Heat the piss out of them (glowing red hot) and they should pop loose, you'll probably need more than a handheld torch though, you'll need a commercial size one that gets hotter than shit. That's shitty though.

Re: Porting the bitch!

Probably a bit too late. But before I removed my exhaust mani and t-25 I soaked the bolts in PB Blaster twice a day for 3 days before I attempted to remove them. When I did go to remove them they came out with no trouble at all. Im not sure what kind of down time you can afford (depends on if you have a dd) but I would try soaking them in pb blaster for a couple days.

Re: Porting the bitch!

No wastegates open to 90*, not stock MHI ones anyway. Its more like 45*.

Re: Porting the bitch!

I've never had to result to heating anyting to remove a bolt. I am curious and this may seem like a semi-noob question. But what truely is the benefit of heating up the bolt before trying to remove it? Wouldn't heating it make the bolt harder to extract, by virtue that things expand when heated up and contract when cooled down?

Re: Porting the bitch!

This is true, but they should be heating and contracting at basically the same rate since they are both ferrous materials. I think the real benefits to heating is it cracks the corrosion and shit apart, but this is just my best guess.

Re: Porting the bitch!

You wouldn't heat the bolt.. Youd heat the material the bolt is locked into.. It allows that material to expand... And the heat breaks up the rust crud etc... And as for the propane torch your turbo probably saw a bit more heat (ok alot more) on those hard boost runs you did before you ever decided enough wasn't enough.....

good luck
