98 cherokee stumbling and going dead (cleaned NSS)

I have a 98 Cherokee 2wd sport 4.0L with 315K miles on it and it started acting up about 1K miles ago.

Here are the problems...
1. it idles fine but when I put it in reverse (most but not all the time) the truck will stumble horribly and usually die.

2. going down the road if I hit a bump the truck loses power and comes back (the dash gauges appear to lose power as well).

3. I have had it die in D just sitting there some times thought not often.

I took it and had the codes read and here is the list...

1. P0700

2. P0743

3. P0740

4. P1899

5. P0705

Now I have had a problem with the TC since it had around 100K on it. I took it and had the code read and they said it was something about the lock up that basically just gave you a little extra RPM drop and the only way to fix it is replace the TC. Its a company truck and since the shop said it wouldn't hurt to run it like that they opted not to fix it. I assume thats what the P0740 and P0743 is so I don't think that is part of my problem (again it happened over 200K ago).

Searching this forum I found that with the P0705 that you can clean the NSS and fix the problem. Well I cleaned it just like the instructions said and am still having the problem.

Searching the 1899 code (shows bad NSS) on this forum and one person said they replaced their NSS and it didn't fix that problem.

Now my company is getting me a new vehicle at the first of the year so they don't want to put a lot of money into it but I was hoping to be able to fix it cheaply so I can have reverse until then.

I looked at the wires going over the trans (read some wires can short) but they were all wrapped in the protective plastic loom so if it is a wire shorting its not to the chassis. I guess one of the wires can short to another in the wire loom but I really don't want to strip all the loom off to check (though if thats whats needed I will do it).

SO if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Oh and I have bought a new battery because my old one drained in a short time (was told that a low voltage can cause strange running problems on these trucks as well).

Re: 98 cherokee stumbling and going dead (cleaned NSS)

Well the truck got so bad that my company decided to take it to a shop and have it fixed when I was down at the main location last week.

Here is what they found and am surprised I missed it (but dont have someone inside to run the truck while I look at the outside)...

There was a broken motor mount which was stretching and shorting some wires when the motor flexed or when I went over a bump. They replaced the motor mount and the crank sensor (and harness since that is the harness that was shorting I believe...I didn't get to talk to the shop to get specifics so this came third hand).

It is running great again and just figured I would answer my own question in case someone searches something similar.

hard to believe the small amount of problems I have had with this truck in the time I have had it and the mileage I have racked up. Wish they still made the cherokee with the 4L 6.
