Speedometer

A friend who is familar with Isuzu's replace all the belts on my daughters 95 Rodeo. The speedometer hasn't worked since. I bought the repair manual for for 91 to 97 Rodeo's but not too much info there. Removed the speed sensor from the transmission, put it in a vise and metered it while running it with an electric drill. No readings but I don't know if that is a good test. Don't know where the other end of the harness is that comes off the sensor. Think I located the right fuse and it is okay. Wondering if there is a plug in the harness near the belts.
Another problem is a squeal from a belt when first starting the engine but on a second try the noise is gone. Sprayed belt dressing on all the belts a couple of times but always comes back after a few starts. Can't determine which belt.
That's my problems folks and would sure appreciate any help. Thank you all. Jack

Re: Speedometer

Could be any one of the three, but I'd guess alternator belt first. There are 3 belts and 3 different ways to tension them. The alt belt requires loosening a bolt, then turning the tensioner bolt, then retightening the first bolt. I've heard belt dressing breaks down the rubber, shortening the life of your new belts. I'd get the squealer tensioned properly.

sounds like he's the guy you ought to be talking to. there's nothing inherent in the belt replacement process that ought to affect the speedometer.

if you're interested in doing more than oil changes the *very* expensive factory manuals, including the electrical one which shows all connectors etc and their location, will be the way to go. www.helminc.com

this is typical of the alternator belt. it is adjusted much tighter than i've been used to on other vehicles, and i usually adjust it a couple of times shortly after installing a new belt because i'm sceered to tighten so tight without a belt tensioner gauge.

Re: Speedometer

Yep, alternator belt needs to be pretty tight. That belt dressing crap isn't good for anything.

Re: Speedometer

the speedo might need a speed sensor gear inside the tranny , bolts in behind the speed sensor with one 10mm bolt.
