Noise when clutch isn't pressed.

Hey guys. I drive a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse and I am hearing a weird noise. To describe it, it sort of sounds like a continuous clicking or ticking when the clutch is released. When i press the clutch, the noise stops. Any ideas? Suggestions to what I can do about it? Thanks.

Throw out bearing (TOB) is rattling...nothing you can do about it besides replace it, and even then it will start to do it again...nothing is hurt, deal with it like the rest of us...sorry

Re: Noise when clutch isn't pressed.

Actually, isn't a rattling TOB a sign of it going bad? The reason I thought this is because I had one that rattled and I replaced it when I put my new tranny in and it didn't rattle after that...

Re: Noise when clutch isn't pressed.

well, yes and no. The thing is that mine rattled too, i replaced my clutch and TOB and about 1000 or so miles later it started to rattle again...so even the new OEM TOB's or aftermarket ones still rattle after a short while. I dont think there can be any damage done to the tranny or clutch because of a noisy TOB, other than the fact that it is probably going to be fused to your flywheel like mine was, resulting in you having to either destroy the flywheel or pressure plate to get it off should you decide to replace something in there. It sucks ass, and is annoying as hell, but like I said, I dont think any damage is being done.

Re: Noise when clutch isn't pressed.

Ahhh wait wait, ya know what I just thought about... Your supposed to put grease on the TOB edge that touches another surface to prevent it from being damaged AND to eliminate TOB rattle... Did you do that when you replaced your TOB? If not, maybe that is why it is still rattling... I bet that's why mine doesn't rattle this time around...

Re: Noise when clutch isn't pressed.

Wouldn't mater in this case.
This is a well known problem with this car.
Top 2 noise calling problems with this car are, TOB rattle and lifter tick.

Not sure if you are aware of this or not...but in order to get to your TOB you need to drop your trans (Which is the biggest mother fucker in this car). Also, as stated by me earlier, you will probably not be able to disengage your TOB from your pressure plate to even get it out....so you are probably up shit crick on this one.

PS. Unless you REALLY know what you are doing you should NOT attempt to replace the clutch on your own. I took mine to a shop that works on FWD cars specifically and it still took them 2 days to get the job done because it is such a pain in the ass.

Re: Noise when clutch isn't pressed.

yeaaah thanks for that man. and the whole clutch thing, i can wonder how much of a bitch it was to change it. are you running on a performance clutch? because when i decide to change it, i'm not sure whether my best bet is a OEM clutch or a performance clutch. i was told that the clutch is harder to engage with performance clutches.

Re: Noise when clutch isn't pressed.

I have a SPEC Stage 2+ Clutch kit with a Fidanza Lightened flywheel. It drives OOOHHH soo much better than the stock one did. It grabs nice and early, and hard, but not so hard that there is no friction zone. No slip at all when I smash through gears, it grabs hard every time no matter how hard I'm driving. It does make a loud humming noise sometimes though when it's in the friction zone...not sure why, but I'm over it.
