1997 Megane 4-digit immob. code

Car: 1997 Megane 1.6E Sport

I know how to enter the 4-digit immobiliser code to get the car started and/or reset the key fob, but is there a way of working out what the code should be in the first place (short of paying Renault to supply it)? I seem to remember reading somewhere about pressing the accelerator and holding in the button on the end of one of the sticks, then counting, etc. etc. Maybe it wasn't for this car ...

Any help gratefully received.
