Brand of timing belt?

I'm getting ready to do my own timing belt replacement. Mainly because my water pump took a crap on me and I figure I might as well do both at the same time.

My question is, I bought a Duralast timing belt. I just read a few horror stories about belts that are not from a Mitsu dealer. Is there any truth behind these stories? Will a Duralast belt be sufficient for me?

Also, any tips from people that have done this type of job before that may help me out would be appreciated. I've already printed out the vfaq article and have my chiltons ready to go, so I should be good.

Ok thanks, any particular reason why? Do they just break or what?

Re: Brand of timing belt?

Well, I've only used OEM t belts. I'd rather have the peace of mind of my belt not breaking and destroying my motor, even if the belt costs alot more.

Re: Brand of timing belt?

Other ones supposedly are of lesser quality and will stretch/break. Honestly, I've never heard of one breaking, but on something as important as that I sure as shit wouldnt want to risk it.

Re: Brand of timing belt?

OEM belts last. The timing belt needs to be a very specific size and durability, otherwise you can run into big problems. While you may not have a problem with your Duralast belt, I would still return it and get an OEM one just because it is the most important belt under your hood...and wouldn't you hate to save a few $$ and then lose a motor? When I had my belt changed, I inspected the old one and after 83,xxx miles it was still in great shape. I could have gotten another 20k out of it probably without problems.

Re: Brand of timing belt?

Duralast anything sucks ass. Batteries, starters, alts... they all suck. I'm never buying another Duralast anything for a long long time. So no I wouldnt trust my timing with Duralast.

Re: Brand of timing belt?

Dude. Isnt Duralast a Walmart brand? Did you get your t belt at Walmart?! Anything besides oil, filters, and coolant from Walmart is a no-no.

I don't know about that. I get... or got everything Duralast from Autozone. Not sure what Wal-Mart sells. Don't they sell Frame products too?

I think you're right. I remember hearing those Autozone commercials on TV with that gay ass jingle "Built to last, Duralast." And yes, Walmart sells Fram products, none of which I would every think about buying.
