minor clunk

I have a 2000 z24 with 112k. When i take off from from a stop i hear a minor clunk from the right front, i can also feel it in the steering wheel. Like i said its minor but I'm picky. It also happens when i pull in my driveway which has a steep slope at the bottom. It will make this clunk about twice, once when i first hit the incline and then when I'm over it. Is this a sign of a wearing lower ball joint? Thanks Derek

Re: minor clunk

Okay, here goes - It's probably either the ball joint, strut mount, or stabilizer bar links. It's probably the links, though. The problem is, nobody can check it out over the internet so your expectation of answers is pretty unrealistic.

You should bring it to a shop if you're not sure how to check your front end components. They might charge you but it'll be cheaper than just throwing parts at it.

help?

Re: minor clunk

I'm not expecting a definite answer! I just need some ideas. You talk about the stabilizer bars.. Like i said its when i take off from a stop its like something on the passenger front move just enough to make a clunk. Once you are going its fine and when you turn sometimes into a parking spot it will do it. I jacked the car up the other day and tried jiggling the the tire vertically to see if there was any play and there was none. I just want to know what to check for to dismiss parts as the problem so i know where to focus my attention. Thanks again Derek

Re: minor clunk

Could also be control arm bushings.

Re: minor clunk

I have the same problem with my 96 Cav. I hear the noise on the right side of the front of the car. I replaced the ball joint on that side, which was extremely loose so I thought I had the problem fixed. Pulled out of my driveway and heard the same noise again!! I'm going back under the car this coming week and see what I can find. But for what to look for: Ball joints, axle joints, stabilizer bar bushings, lower control arm bushings, spring mounts, tie rod ends, then look and see if anything else in the region is loose, such as exhause system, etc.
Hope you find it,
Joe
