Keyless entry

1990 Cherokee Laredo with PL. I have keyless entry on this that appears to be some sort of after market product but the key fob has Chrysler on it so I am guessing it is factory. The question is, there is a small piece mounted on the dash just above the headlight switch that is the receiver part of this. The remote has two buttons on it labeled 1 and 2. Both buttons seem to open and close the lock cylinders. There is a little push button on the receiver that when pushed lights a small green light on it. The remote buttons seem to work if it is lit or not lit. Doesn't seem to matter. Any thoughts on this? Thought maybe someone out there may have the same sort of set up and can help me.

Re: Keyless entry

Not sure about the '90. I have PL with the keyless entry but the PO lost the remotes. It was cheaper for me to buy an entire aftermarket system with 2 remotes than purchase even one "factory" remote. I have no such device as you describe above my light switch. On my '88 the receiver is on the headliner between the sun visors. Do you have the full overhead console?

As far as your current system. the button may be the "valet" switch that permits operation if they only have the key (no remote). It may also permit the programming of different options, such as horn chirp, lights flash, etc.

Re: Keyless entry

Thanks for the input. Yes I have the full overhead console so maybe that is the reason it is located where it is. As far as programming since I have no instruction manual on this I am at a loss.

Re: Keyless entry

I have a 91 cherokee and the PO said that it came with keyless but had lost the remote, where might I find replacement?

I tried one of the remote places on ebay and they emailed me back to say that they don't make that remote anymore.

Re: Keyless entry

The earlier XJ's used IR keyless systems and require "factory" programming. The link below shows how to get the proper codes. It also shows the overhead console with the IR receiver.

You can order remotes from the same place.

However, as I said before, they are way more expensive than an aftermarket. Since I'm pretty good at wiring, I chose that route so I'd have 2 remotes and a bit more functionality that just lock/unlock.

Gasman1: Yours may be from another model Jeep or other chrysler. Look at the first link and scroll down until you see the console. Do you have the little "bubble"?

Re: Keyless entry

Your right, at $76.00 I think I will go the aftermarket route myself.

Thanks for the info!

Re: Keyless entry

A question that I forgot to ask last night:

The guy I got the jeep from said if you lock the doors with the key, sometimes when you try to unlock the door the alarm goes off.

Is there any way to disconnect it in case I might want to unlock my doors without embarrasment?

Re: Keyless entry

Your entry system likely ties into the door switches (maybe through the interior lights). If it senses voltage without unlocking with the remotes, it fires off the alarm.

Usually, you can disable the feature (I can on my aftermarket), or set the valet switch before you lock up which will stop the alarm from going off.

You're now going to ask, "So how do I do that?". Sorry I don't have anything that covers that.

Re: Keyless entry

Mine does have the little bubble on the overhead but my remote is a two button remote and not a single as stated on the link. I am going to have to take the console down to replace the headliner in a couple of weeks. I will look when I have it down and see if there is something there pertaining to the remote. Thanks again for the input.
