Rebuild Heads?

So as you know I have my engine compartment torn apart and the engine out to work on replacing the pistons. Just wondering, besides the obviously lesser risk of future repairs, is it worth the money to have the head rebuilt?

Re: Rebuild Heads?

Do you have the spare green? I dont know about a full rebuild, but you should definatey invest in a valve job and a full timing belt job if you can afford it.

Re: Rebuild Heads?

How many miles are on the motor? If you're going to rebuild the head, you might as well go with a nice port/polish, valve job, and maybe some upgraded cams.

Re: Rebuild Heads?

Cams are not a head out job, you should spend money on things more pertinent than that. Same for port and polish, I see you have a 190 and anything that 190 can support wont see the benefits of a $1000 port/polish job. Sorry to completely shoot you down Garrett, but judging from his sig hes in for a budget build and thats some expensive shit to do.

Re: Rebuild Heads?

Mileage is still a factor, but I didn't even take time to read the sig before. After seeing that you're on a "budget build", the best thing for you to do would be to just have everything cleaned up good, again, depending on mileage.

Re: Rebuild Heads?

Honestly, I think it all depends on your future plans. If your not really planning on building a high HP machine then why worry about porting/polish or stuff like that. At the least, I would replace all the timing components if you got the spare money. If you got the money to throw into it and have plans to put the mods to good use then go for it. Don't just go and upgrade everything and go crazy on the head just because people on here told you to.

Re: Rebuild Heads?

The body has 114K and the engine has 96K (Swaped engine about 20K ago, but he says he bought it striaght out of a junker and didnt touch the internals.) Obviously i dont want the car to smoke at idle so the valve job idea sounds good. But, about the port/polish....will it benefit me that much for the money i will spend? I really think I shuld do the timing belt, though. Dont want to scrap the car anytime soon, lol.

Re: Rebuild Heads?

If you do it yourself it will, then you only need to spend a couple bucks for some carbide bits you might not have and a die grinder. If you dont have an decent air compressor or you are going to have to pay someone to do it, then no, for that much it wont benefit you. Like I said, for any turbo that will be supported by the 190, a port and polish job is almost wasted cash. I think they will run you $1000+ pretty easy, that $1000 should be put toward things like fuel management, exhaust, good intercooling, good maintenance, and a host of other things. A lower boost budget build like this one wont see much if any gains to a P&P particularly if they are still on the stock cams, IM, and smaller turbo on lower boost.

Re: Rebuild Heads?

Yea I have the tools to get the almost any job done (dad owns a robotics manufacturing company w/ loaded shop), but my schedule and budget arn't ideal. This sounds pretty easy to do myself so I might as well while im at it. About the valves though, is that a job for the pros? Or do yu think i could do it myself?

Re: Rebuild Heads?

Do you have a valve seat grinder? My guess is no, just take it to a shop and have them grind the seats and plane the head for ya.
