Re: 93 escort replacing thermostat{where??)
To make it easier to get to the thermostat, I removed the ignition coil pack first. This required undoing the connector, then using some tiny socket size, like 7 mm or 8 mm to unsrew the coil pack, and then the bracket underneath that supports it. I had already removed the large rubber duct that runs from the air filter to the throttle body. With that stuff out of the way I could see the thermostat housing better. Besides the hose from the radiator, it also has a smaller hose that connects it to a metal tube with temp. sensors on it, which then feeds the heater. If your upper radiator hose is more than 7 or 8 years old, it might be a good idea to replace it at the same time.

Re: 93 escort replacing thermostat{where??)
Unless you take the time to drain the coolant from the block (not from the radiator) be prepared for some messy spilling. I think most people will try to carefully remove the hose and just let it spill out, but that usually just makes a mess. If you can get to it easily just pull the plug on the block that is under the exhaust manifold... you would have to access it from under the car.
As stated above, just follow that upper radiator hose to where it connects on the engine side and you will have found the thermostat housing. Remove that housing and you will find what you are looking for
