Question 1996 pontiac sunfire overheated

i am the original owner and changed oil at 3000 all the time-I have never had a problem with this car until christmas eve- i had only been driving about 10 minutes when the temp gueage shot all the way up to hot- i opulled over and called a tow truck- i did notice that driving in to wirk that morning- that when i was at a stop light my heat starting blowing cold air- but as soon as i started to drive it got hot again. i have has the therm changed and coolant drained - but guage still sore right up.... is it the head gasket or head??? or something else... the coolant also was very merky when drained --HELP
