WIP: Subaru Impreza WRC 2004 Rally Japan

Hi guys, i'm having a wrc group built with my local forum, so i will put my MB Clk-Gtr aside 1st

im going to use this PE set

drill out holes on both sides to insert seatbelts

there's a huge gap between the wheel arch and body, so i add some styrene card to extend the wheel arch

there's a huge gap at this angle, now it is fix with styrene card, forgot to take pic before mod

dry fit of the roll cage, since im going to add some wiring, seat belts & some detailing, this is to see where the wiring goes, where fits and where not, since this rollcage is quite complicated, so proper planning of glueing is important, and i spot 2 protuding peg at behind the seat that serve no purpose, i guess it is because the chassis is from 2001 version, which suppose had something there

quick mock up

though i'm building the rally japan, i got another set of tarmac wheels and since i like tarmacs wheel i lowered the suspension and decided to had 2 sets of wheels

I only had 1 bottle of finisher ricebox's subaru wrc blue, i worried i might run out halfway, so i mix a custom metalic blue with mr color metallic blue + gaia ultra blue + flurescent pink as base coat, and apply the wrc blue on top of it

here's the comparison:

though not clearly shown in pics, the A+B results are a deeper blue which i think close enough to the impreza's mica blue

drill some holes at the roll cage

since i already remove the wiper nozzles earlier, i got no choice but to scratch it

left is shaped, right is unshape plastic plate 0.25mm cement on stretch sprue

drill some holes again at the bumper

use some 0.4mm dia rivet with 0.75 diameter from hobby design

here is how it looks

Hi your progress is very interesting to watch, you should choose a tarmac rally now that you have lowered the suspension,

I think I should have spare decals for Solberg 2005 Monte Carlo version...
(I'll build 2006 car with Renaissance TK).
Let me know if you're interested in getting them.

Re: WIP: Subaru Impreza WRC 2004 Rally Japan

tiny update:

the final color which i post earlier the A+B, the B is ricebox's wrc blue which is matt, so i still had to apply another 1-2 gloss clear before decal, another wait...

scratchbuilt some component, from left i think is leg rest?, mic/communication controller, LCD screen

some CF (Carbon Fiber) decal parts

those CF above is from KA models, though the scale size is not very small, but it looks ok, coz the silver is actually darker shade, compare below CF from crazy modeler which a bit fake when zoom in

Capture from http://www.subaru-msm.com/global/entertain/index.html

although an illustration, it shows what's inside the 2004 cockpit

and some reference pics, not exactly the car driven by Petter Solberg but at least some close up shot on the cockpits

Re: WIP: Subaru Impreza WRC 2004 Rally Japan

Here's some pics of the body under the sun

this is after 2000 wetsand, Autosol, Tamiya Coarse Compound, Fine & Finish, the metallic flakes makes the camera keep focusing on the flakes instead of the reflection :P

only the roof had been polish until Tamiya's Finish Compound, the rest is just wetsand with 2000 and Autosol

here is the underchasis, almost done, not glue yet, just dryfit, weathered the exhaust and engine a bit

the PE disc brake havent install yet

the seat, semi-gloss, kevlar decal, 2 layer gloss coat, wetsand and polish, mask and spray flat, then disaster struck, notice the left seat, some kevlar tear off when removing masking tape, i had to cut some kevlar decal from my Peugeot 307 wrc which luckily had 3 seat decals, but the color was slightly different, so i use smoke to level it, but now it looks terrible

door panel with CF decal, not clear coat yet

Re: WIP: Subaru Impreza WRC 2004 Rally Japan

Some update

here is the rear wing painted in wrc blue, gloss coat, masked and spray black for the carbon fiber

trace the carbon fiber shape on masking tape, for duplication, i made a template on plastic-card, then transfer the template on back of CF decal, because its a symetrical design, u can do this, otherwise u'll only get opposite side

took me around 3 hours for tracing all the 25 pieces to the decal sheet, and here is how it looks after another 3 hours

and its not done yet, i still need to do some touch up

side panel done with gloss coat

fire extinguisher decaled and gloss coat

side mirror CF decaled and gloss coat

centre console CF and semi-gloss coated

side roll cage done with flat black on the pads

Re: WIP: Subaru Impreza WRC 2004 Rally Japan

Updates:

Manage to apply some decal last night, from 50cm away it looks ok

Close up of the damn brittle decal

it crack before i even apply Softer, and crack even more after i apply softer, now i need to mix some fluorescent yellow and hopefully can touch up those crack lines, other part where decals sit on flat surface was ok

Side door decal gloss coat, after few days, wetsand with 1000 & 2000 then compound with Autosol, Tamiya Coarse & Fine Compound

here's the gloss coat without wetsand and compound
