The 'real' trailblazers came out in 2002... so if you're seeing the badge "Trailblazer" on a 1999 model, Better off calling it a "Blazer". It's the old body style with the old design interior and exterior, and no one really knows why GM put the new name on it back then. I think GMC had an envoy based on the old 'jimmy' body style as well.

Other than that, the previous generation chevy SUV's were pretty good with the 4.3L V6. Nothing compares to the current-generation Trailblazer (years 2002-2009) in turning radius, interior, fit and finish, and performance with the 4.2L Inline 6.

IMHO, if you can afford it, see if there are any 2003-2005 TB's in your area and take a test drive. Apples-to-apples, you are getting a much better truck if you go with the real trailblazers, as apposed to the rebranded blazers.

For what it's worth...

Re: buying a 99 trailblazer

- check the front suspension components for wear as these trucks like to go through ball joints, idler arms, tie rods, wheel bearings things like that.
- check the oil cooler lines for leaks as these also tend to fail.
- check the cooling system for any leaks or sludge in the system. if the dexcool is not properly maintained, it will accelerate the deterioration of the lower intake manifold gasket. it usually fails around that mileage so i would watch it closely.
- make sure the 4 wheel drive is operating correctly
- if you can, take a scanner with you and check the computer for any trouble codes.
