How to fix backfiring, dying, not running after start

Problems I have had and fixed this year....read this there are many!!

1. PROB: To much air flow and running rich CURE: Map Sensor

2. PROB: Gas running into the air filter CURE: ??Fuel pump control modual?? whatever it's called it controls the amount of fuel/air that goes into the fuel rails and down to the map sensor. This was a big bad prob that cause the car to catch on fire making causing us to have all the wiring replaced. But anyway!!!

3. PROB: Slow pick up from time to time, spitting/sputtering once in a while) and (back firing once in a while) all these probs were here and there type things, whevever the car decided to do it, (Sounded like it was loading up alot) CURE: Removal of cat. converter, replacing with a str8 pipe, because the converter was to pricey for my problem car.

4. PROB: Couldn't get car to stay running long enough to get a code. CURE: ECM (Electronic Control Modual) repaced. $15.00 at salvage yard, $7 if u pull it yourself....to much if purchased elsewhere. Enough to make ya sick.

5. PROB: Ran it out of gas and once fuel was put in it wouldn't restart. Tryed until the fuel pump quit kicking on. I had burned up the fuel pump. CURE: Changed fuel pump and fuel pump relay. Not exactly sure which one it needed or if it needed both, but the relay is only $7, fuel pump was $80 or so.

6. PROB: BUYING NEW BRAKES ALL THE FREAKIN TIME -- Read a few posts here that say early Luminas known for this prob.... Something about calipers sticking on reg. basis on these cars causing brake pads to wear....
Finally, guess we all ask these questions because we are either very happy with our Lumina's or because we are to broke to buy a new car. I love my car, eventhough I have had newer vehicles...but the car fits me just right.

Re: 93 Lumina 3.1, I am becoming an expert

Too much air flow means its running too lean, not too rich. Do you mean, fuel pressure regulator? These are known to go bad on the 3.1's, but it usually is a one time repair. If your pulling an ECM code from an OBD vehicle, not OBDII, the car should not be able to run. And last but not least... Always try and keep a little over a quarter tank of gas in your car at all times. Nowadays, the fuel pump is in the tank, and the gas in it helps cool the pump, if the pump isnt submerged in the gas, it wont stay cooled, and will eventually burn out. And as you said, you ran out of gas, the pump was probably pumping air, and thats not good for it. I think you wasted your money on the fuel pump relay, b/c its just a realay, they really never go bad. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: 93 Lumina 3.1, I am becoming an expert

Thank you, found out the hard way about keeping enough gas in it and as far as the relay is goes, your probably right, but if it is on my car, believe me, it WILL go bad...lol I think I have heard, "well, that probably isn't the problem because that don't usually burn out, (go bad)." I am starting to think that Lumina's are the "go bad" cars. But I still love my car, and it doesn't even look that great...lol but it has great pick up, unless it dies...lmao

Hey i just bought one and i am having a hard time finding this problem.
I will start the car and it will run fine for a while then i will stop and go back and start it takes a couple of times then it will start but i will go about 3 to 4 miles then it will loose power and die. Does this sound like a faulty Ignition Coil Pack guys?

Welcome to AF Vefilms.

Please start your own new thread with your specific problem (and please be as specific as possible including the year and engine in your particular car). This original post is over 3 years old, and it is against AF guidelines to resurrect old threads like this as they clutter up the boards. This thread will be sent to the appropriate moderator to be closed. Thank you for your future compliance.
