Need A Little Help - Pistons

Hows it goin,

So here's the deal. About a month ago I bought a 93 eagle talon tsi with the work. Ill spare you the boring details, but basically about five days after i bought it i had a hole in one of the pistons. Diagnostically boring, but the question is, what parts do I need to change all four pistons, and do you know of any tricks to add to the cars power. As you can tell I know a little about engines, but once you start to dig that deep I start to lose it.

Thanks alot,
Joel

Re: Hole in a Piston

So you got a hole in the piston eh ? Why do you think you got one and if you rebuild it, wouldnt it happen again. Also I see no mods except this. Who tunned the car, does it have a wideband, what turbo and boost are you running, what injectors. Car running lean .. rich. Give us all the mods. Your sig says :Live From The Great State of Hockey .... which doesnht help me much. There are OEM rebuildkits and then performance rebuild kits. What is your budget, what is your power goal ? And most important who will be doing the work ? And I saw you want more power the easy way, just buy the T4 Monster turbo for $250 of ebay and its rated for 700whp, put a intake and start flying.

Re: Hole in a Piston

A hole in the piston is because of the piston melting from extremely high combustion chamber temperatures. How does this happen? Running really lean and knocking like crazy. Did you just throw in a boost controller, crank that shit up, and start wanking on it? Or was it the person before you? This is a perfect example of why a person needs to do a LOT of research before they start modding a car.

As for what its going to cost, thats entirely dependant on how bad you fucked the motor up when doing that. You are for sure going to need new pistons, rings, bearings, the normal machining, gaskets, head studs, etc. I have never been into a motor that was abused that badly, but I think its totally feasible that the motor is or is almost completely junk.

As for the power, you need to do a lot of reading before you should be worried about that.

After thought: Your sig says you are in the hockey state... and if thats not Minnesota then you are not in the hockey state . Where about in MN are you?

Need A Little Help - Pistons

So, I bought an Eagle Talon 93 about a month ago. The guy that I bought it from spent a ton of money and time into this car. Traditionally, it was a standard Talon 2.0l non-turbo automatic. Now its a 2.0l turbo 5-speed. Only one problem, when he added the turbo he did all of the necessary performance swaps except the stock cast pistons. So sure enough, a small hole was blown through one of the pistons about a week after purchase. My question is if anyone could help me out with a list of part that I would need to buy to change the pistons. My brother and I can take car of most performance swaps untill you start to dig deep into the engine so your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks alot,
Joel

P.s. If you have any more ideas for performance swaps while the engine is torn apart that would be awesome also.

Re: Need A Little Help - Pistons

Do you want to stroke it? You should be able to get forged rods and pistons for around 800. Im not sure on the difference between the 4g63nt and the 4g63t but make sure you get the right set if they are different. Also you might want to figure out why your stock piston has a hole in it. They even though they aren't that strong they usally fail from excessive heat or detonation. Make sure you fix this before you put all new internals in it.

Re: Need A Little Help - Pistons

So are you saying that this set just isnt the one? Ive searched for individual parts on summit racing and it looks to be about 450 for forged pistons and another 400 or so for the rods. Do you think that buying the crank shaft is uneccesary?

P.S. The stock piston had a hole from overboost, and I have already taken care of it and installed an intercooler.

Re: Need A Little Help - Pistons

You also dont need two threads on the same subject particularly in the wrong subforum. (I merged them)

The NT and turbo pistons are different, the difference lies in the compression ratio and also the fact that the NT pistons were not designed to put up with the extra shit the turbo ones are. Be sure to get turbo pistons.

Re: Need A Little Help - Pistons

Sorry about the double post thing. It was an error, I posted it in the morning and when I checked it at about 11 it wasn't there, and know I understand why...But the reason I have no specs for you is because, like I said, I have owned the car for less than a month and have only driven it for about 4 or 5 days. So the crank is uneccesary but the pistons will do? And from some of the snide comments towards my moding abilities, which have nothing to do to with this car, I understand I need to play around with the turbo boost and the fuel. Any help there? The reason I have no details is I made this account early this morning and havn't had time. I will try and catch up.

Thanks again,
Joel

Re: Need A Little Help - Pistons

What are you using to tune the car with? You should keep boost around 8psi or so to make sure you have the car tuned pretty good then slowly turn it up more.

Re: Need A Little Help - Pistons

I will do that. Im sure the guy that I bought it from has the boost set way too high. One more question for this thread, do you know the standard bore size for these engines? Just need to know how much to order. If not it's no big deal to take it into NAPA.
