I recently bought a 1990 Iroc-Z w/ the 350 TPI engine ( auto ) . This kid at work says he has a 1996 Trans Am w/ Ram Air and he says he has 320 hp. From what I've looked up the stock T/A is about 285 and ram air doesn't really do much for performance. His is manual. Now, unless he screws up shifting, he's gonna win, but he insists he'll kill me. In the 1/4 (assuming hes an average shifter) how much do you think he'd win by and how much hp do you think he's actually got ( assuming its stock except for ram air)?

His car is "rated" at something like 285HP.
He'll kill you. He has a low 14-high 13 sec. car. You have a low 15-high 14 second car.

Yeah if it's a 96 Trans Am you hardly have a chance. Now I know the GTA (the 350 Firebird cousin to your Iroc-Z) only came with Automatic, did the Iroc-Z only come with automatic or was there an option for a 5-speed?

With the 305 engine, there was the automatic or 5 speed option, but the 350 only came in the 4 speed auto.

The 305 was the RS though as well as the junky V6. GM's logic sometimes.....I dunno. Best engine, make it an auto only...

actually your wrong the 305 was put in early model irocs and was put in 90-91 z-28 when you got a manual tranny. and most 350 you see have a auto. almost all manual tranny's between 82-91 had 305
the differance in the 2 is IROC/Z-28 305 TPI RS came with 6 cly or a 305 TBI |

You could get iroc-z's with a 305 tbi, tpi, or a 350 tpi. They only used automatics on 350's because the motor would tear up the weak 5-speed. You could only get 305's in convertibles. I have a 305tbi and 305 tpi iroc. I just sold a 350 auto iroc coupe. when the iroc first came out in 1985 the biggest motor was the 305 tpi. There is a big difference between an lt-1 motor and the traditional 350 tpi motors.

How would it tear it up, the Vette had the 350 as well and didn't they have the option of a 5 speed?

I don't think that vettes ever had a 5-speed tranny. In the mid 80's they had a 4+3 transmission, and an automatic. As far as I know they used those until they started using the 6-speeds. If they did use the 5-speed maybe it was from a different manufacturer. I would sure like to know if anyone has seen a 5-speed eighties corvette.

I was guessing anyways I would of thought by then it would use a 5 speed since the V6 and 305 V8 Camaro's and Firebirds used them.

One word: (Although it might hurt your engine over continued use) Nitrous :smoker2:
Either that, or hit the gas, powershift. amd pray to God he sucks at driving stick. In my experience, 70% of new Trans Am owners (I'm sure noone on this site..dont worry) buy a Trans Am purely for the look..and to pick up chicks. They may not be able to handle the power. (hey, if i could afford one i'd drive it..)
