'94 Bronco starter problems

Ok, a couple weeks ago the starter went out in my '94 E.B. Bronco with the 302. While taking the starter out, the top bolt snapped. So we drilled the hole out and ran a bolt through it with nut and lockwasher to hold it on. We got a remanufactured started, bolted it all in, wired it, changed the solinoid and i even took the battery out of my other truck for it. When you turn the key the starter clicks and the gears spin but thats it, the truck won't start.

There is no specific relay in the fusebox labeled "starter" either, so im not sure how to check that.

I highly doubt it's a power problem because the lights are bright and all the power options work.

Help?

Re: '94 Bronco starter problems

You need to get 12 volts and 200 amps to the starter. You could have a bad battery cable. Put a voltmeter on the starter terminal and try cranking the engine. Voltage can only fall to 9.6 volts while starting.

Re: '94 Bronco starter problems

Pull the inspection plate on your tranny and check the flywheel for missing/worn/broken teeth. Your problem may be that the last starter chewed up the flywheel. Check your wiring to the starter for fit. (Making sure it's tight.) Also make sure that the mounting bolts are true and tight. (Maybe the starter is a bit cocked off-line.) If you pull the starter, check to make sure it functions properly by adding electrical supply to it while out of the truck* to make sure the bendix operates. (I've had them spin, but the bendix didn't extend-so it never made contact with the actual flywheel.)

Having said all of that, if none of that works, you got a bad starter, and should return it.

* you do this by putting jumper cables on your battery-wire the negative (black) to the mounting dog-ear on the starter body, and hit the positive (red) on the regular wiring connector. It should spin and extend. (Don't let it crank around and hit you in the shin, tho'!) Don't hold it connected that way for more than a half second.
