Identity Porblem

Ok, I've had this 64 1/2 sitting in my garage for almost 10 years. It's not much more than a rolling shell. I've just never had enough money or time to complete the restoration. On top of that I have no papers for it, I got from my uncle before me moved out of state, way out of state. I had a plan to get a cheap, decent running 65 and transplant part to the 64 1/2. I got one for real cheap, much less than half what it would have cost me to restore the 64 1/2. The thing is this 65 I have now was wrecked at least twice, and repaired. No surprise there since it was so cheap, but it still runs. The 65 is registered, and legally mine. Think I could get away with swapping the data plates? The 64 1/2 only has the VIN on the data plate, and on top of the fender aprons, but those will covered by a set of chrome trim accent pieces I'm planning to install. What should I do? Has this ever been done before?

Re: Identity Porblem

Just fill out a lost tittle on the 64 1/2. I have heard that once they are 35 years or older you dont even need a title, but I'm not sure on that.

Re: Identity Porblem

There's the problem, In California that form requires infromation about the legal owner of the car. Legaly my uncle is still the owner, and I don't have any Idea where he is now. Proof of ownership is needed for either a duplicate title or salvage title. I don't know, maybe I'll just have to try my luck.

Re: Identity Porblem

Nothing like publicly asking for counsel on doing something illegal...

Track down your MIA uncle and get him to sign over ownership or write up a signed bill of sale. From there you will have to pay to transfer the title and get a new pink slip. That all should have been done when you got the car.

CA is not a fun place to play the title paperwork game.
