'98 cavy wouldn't start after dying battery

I can't fit the whole idea into the title line, but after traveling 500 miles to NYC and making some rounds about town, I drove to a friend's home and parked the car. I then went to re-start it and nothing happened; no click of the starter, just the usual idiot lights came on. After much head-scratching and thoughts about returning home with my car, I figured that I would have to BYPASS THE IGNITION-START WIRE(PURPLE) after finding it. I carefully spliced into it with 20 gauge wire taped it up with all of those harness hoses and then determined that I could stick my key in the ignition lock, turn it to start once release it, then run outside to the engine and (BRIEFLY) touch this selenoid trigger wire to the positive post of the battery to start the engine. I also replaced the old battery that had drained out totally after 100+ degrees and 4+ years in the tray.Until I can have the steering column wiring looked at, I'll be popping my hood everyday to get here and there.
MY QUESTION: Is there a fuseable link associated with the ignition (start engine) wire that is accessible and replaceable without a total harness tear-down? I surely hope so. There are no other issues with the car ie NO CHECK ENGINE lights lit.
