engine and transmission problems

i have a 92 crown vic with 139743 miles. the car drives smooth, but at an idle stop the engine runs rough and serges as if it wants to shut off along with the dash panel light dimming as if it were loosing power and sometimes the car cuts off but it restarts fine any sugestions?(i have a check engine light)

also my transmission picks up speed fine SOMETIMES but around 25 and 35 miles when accelerating the car vibrates and shakes (im guessing from trying to catch the next gear). Also ive noticed when i hit about 40 the car feels as if somthing is pulling the car back slowing it down.

any help comments or suggestion would be greatly appreciated

Re: engine and transmission problems

How long since..

PCV valve changed?

Air and fuel filter change?

Plugs & wires change?

trans fluid & filter change?

See if you can get the codes scanned, to find out why the check engine light is on. The cars computer might know whats going on.

Look for vac leaks

Re: engine and transmission problems

Depending on what actual number the codes were and what the diagnostic said about them would indicate what would be the best way to repair the problems your having.

If you could tell us the numbers of the codes the diagnostic revealed.

EDIT: if you go to auto zone and get the codes scanned they can print out what the diagnostic system concludes. Its free of charge. You could remember what it said or bring the print out back and type out what exactly it said. Good luck and if you can get the exact codes let us know.

Have you checked all the major fuses to see if they have power running in and out of them. Also check the inertia switch and stuff like that. Ive heard of many people with crown vics turning the car and it shutting itself off. But usually the problem self corrects and it fires right back up.

Try a test light and make sure all the fuses that are important light up. The problem could be as simple as a bad fuse connection or loose ground wire or something.

Re: engine and transmission problems

well when i went to start the engine again it seemed like it wanted to start for a quick second but then it kinda backfired a little when i tried it again ,so im guessing its not locked. when cranked and held it make a 3-4 toned sound that is repeated. any suggestions? and the fuses were checked

Re: engine and transmission problems

Crown vics are known for burning oil. Its unfortunate, but probably half of them on the road right now probably need some oil. You can tell they need oil when they start to make a clatter sort of sound at the top of first and second gear while the engine is pushing higher RPM's. Even if the oil is totally full if you hear that sound the oil is shot.

If you dont have an oil leak you car has probably been low on oil for quite some time. A motor with 140K miles doesnt burn it down very quickly. Even those abused only burn about a quart a month. Also if its been ran that low its going to need the old oil completely drained and replaced along with replacing the oil filter.

What is the fuel pressure?
Did you put some oil in it?

I would suggest having it put in a shop for a diagnosis. It sounds like your having multiple problems wich could all be figured out by handing it over to a professional. I work on a lot of different cars all the time, and sometimes i have to send them in to get figured out if i dont have the equipment to diagnose the problem. Sometimes the best thing is to get a fresh set of eyes on it and hope the problem is found. No shame in it. Also its the best idea if you dont feel like putting money down on parts without knowing 100% sure what the problem is.

Im guessing the problem your car has isnt too major, and chances are the labor involved wouldnt get too out of hand. Especially if you find a shop that will "no charge" the diagnostic if you have them do the repairs. If its too costly to afford the labor bill you can take the info you recieve from the diagnostic and fix the problem yourself. You will only be out a couple of tow bills and whatever the diagnostic costs. Plus the cost and time of fixing the problem yourself.

Re: engine and transmission problems

Check oil and add. If the oil pressure gets too low the fuel pump may cut off to protect the engine. Your problem could be just adding a quart of oil I have seen this on other cars/
