Your feelings about the Pit Bull

i havnt been to this section in awhile, so i decide to talk about the most hated dog in the country right now, the pitbull

from experience and word of mouth, honestly, i have heard about more greman shephards attacking people then i have pitbulls

actually i owned a few gsd and when i was younger, out of all the dogs in the nieghborhood(witch had atleast 4 pitbulls) my dog was known as the meanest and most scariest dog in the nieghborhood

from what experts say, the pitbull is actually more freindly toward humans than dobermans, german shephards, akita's, chows, pomeranian and many others

so why do they get the bad rep? why are they singled out?

they single the dog out because it was created to fight bulls in a ring, and then breed to fight eachother...its the fact that humans made a dog specifically to fight, and once it was outlawed then the dog became like the american dog...but when anything gets in the hands of bad people guns, dogs etc...
then we have a problem, and there are more bad people out there than sand at a beach

so regardless if we can raise the dog like it is suppose to be and treat it how it should be treated, fact is...pit bulls were made to fight, and this is were people get there hatred and fear for these animals imo

Re: Your feelings about the Pit Bull

I think Pits are great dogs! I've never met one with a mean bone in it's body. The reason I think they get a bad rep. is basically what you said in your post with the addition that when a Pit does attack it's unrelenting...when a Dobbie or a GSD attacks it's a bite or two usually and it's easy to pull them off (unless they're shutzhund trained) where a Pit Bull like most of it's close relatives were bred to bait bulls. So they were bred to show ZERO fear ever and that to survive it's often required to bite at a bull's nose and hold on. That's what happens when they attack people. They hold the fuck on and it's nearly impossible to get them to let go unless they want to.

When I was in high school I worked at a boarding kennel and we had some intimidating dogs come in. A lot of Rotts, Pits, Dobbies, GSDs, Belgian Malinois, Chows, and Akitas...but I was NEVER once bitten by one of them. But I did get bitten a total of 18 times by Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Westies, and Shihzus. But here's the stat. that shocks most people...I was bitten close to 40 times by Goldens and Labs...

Very few of these bites required any medical attention BTW. Most drew blood but only 8 or 9 needed stitches.

The thing is people take more responsibility with dogs that have a bad rep. than the ones people always look at as the All-American family dogs, these dogs were usually poorly trained and obviously not well socialized. The dogs with the bad-rep were the dogs that you could get out and they made the job easier because they were ALWAYS well trained and socialized because people were aware that they needed to be.

To summarize this all in one sentence...it's the people not the dogs.

*Edit* to make my feelings clear about Pit Bulls, when/if I have a family I will be purchasing a Pit Bull bred from a larger blood line (75 lbs and up parents) a few days after I have my first kid. I trust Pits that much...

Re: Your feelings about the Pit Bull

All our animal shelters here in town are crowded with pit bulls up for adoption. There are pleas in the news from these shelters to adopt the dogs out, yet nobody seems to want to because of their "reputation". I have no problem adopting a pit bull and probably would but I already have 2 dogs. What makes the problem worse is the constant media attention and focus on this breed. We have a part of our city that is a "bad" neighborhood( drug dealers , gang members, high crime area.) Practically everyday there is a newsstory, whether it be on the tv or in the newspaper about an attack on somebody from a pitbull that it's owner had trained to be mean. The owners sometimes "command" their dogs to attack people walking on the sidewalk with their pets, and have even attacked police. Many times the cops are "forced" to shoot and put down the animal to make it stop attacking.
In fact one of my dogs that we adopted from the Humane Society back in 2003 is part pit bull and Rottweiller. This is one of the most gentle, friendly dogs I've seen, and I attribute it to a good upbringing. He is excellent aroung my kids and has never "acted out" towards them.
Here's a picture of him:

Re: Your feelings about the Pit Bull

Labradors are responsible for more injuries than pit bulls. Does anyone demand the extermination of the breed? Nope. Do the insecure hillbillies rush out to buy labradors to guard their patch of dirt? Nope. Do the authorities recover hundreds of labradors from underground dog-fighting rings ? Nope.

Pit bulls are no better and no worse than any other breed of comparable size. The unfortunate thing is the number of sociopaths who are drawn to own such dogs soley because of the reputation created for the breed by ignorant and selfish owners.

Re: Your feelings about the Pit Bull

i think hes an aright rapper, hes got his moments

but in seriousness its retarded around here because of the new laws against these "dangerous" dogs that so many are put up for adoption and owning one costs so much more than any other dog. So many of them had to be put down since Ontario came out with their laws against these dogs I think it's sickening

Wrong

Which makes this diatribe:

Pointless.

Re: Your feelings about the Pit Bull

I love pits. If I had a dog it would be a pit. I know at least a dozen guys with pit bulls and they're all friendly and protective of their owners. I have one friend that breeds pits and his son has played with them since he was a toddler.

I heard about the pit that sodomized the kid, but honestly who hasn't been humped by a horny dog before? In this case, the dog didn't go for the leg and the kid wasn't strong enough to get the dog off him

That'd be because hillbillies are smart enough to know Labs aren't naturally guard dogs and aren't the least bit intimidating...

That's a great video VR4...too bad they didn't have the Belgian Malinois in there...I know from experience that those sleeves are almost worthless when one of them bites them. I had 3 go straight through the cloth on a new sleeve when I first started taking my dog to shutzhund training.
