01 alero won't start
My 01 GX Alero with approx 58,000 miles will not start. Four weeks ago, I drove it to breakfast on a Sunday morning and when I returned to the car an hour later, it wouldn't start. The lights and air would come on and the engine would turn over, but it wouldn't start. Gas was low, but it still had an eighth of a tank or so. I put another gallon in it but it still wouldn't start.
It was parked on the street and a couple people who passed by were nice enough to take a look and both said they thought it might be a fuel pump problem. Had the car towed to dealership. This was on a Sunday. When the service folks arrived Monday morning, they said it started just fine. They said they couldn't pick up any error codes and that the fuel pump looked fine. It has started without problems since then...until this morning and it is having the exact same problems. Does anyone have any ideas? I have read several other posts that touch on a similar problem, but they have also had problems with the car stalling, which I haven't had. For what it is worth, there seems to be another problem (not sure if it is completely separate or related) with ABS to track. When going slow, around idle speed, if you turn the wheel all of the dash lights come on and sometimes while turning and breaking there seems to be humming noise from the breaks. It still breaks fine when it does this and it isn't jerky at all, it is just the noise then the lights come on. If you turn engine off and then start, the lights don't automatically come back on. When it was towed the dealership, they said they scanned the system and came up with code C1225 wheel speed sensor failure. This was supposedly fixed. A few days ago, for the first time since it was fixed a month ago, the break noise came back and several of the dashboard lights came back on. Like I said, not sure if these are two completely different problems or if they are related. If the car starts in the next couple of days, I will drive it back to the dealer to have them reexamine why it isn't always starting and also have them look to see why the dashboard lights are coming on. Does anyone have any idea what the problem(s) might be? Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Re: 01 alero won't start
Daughter had the same problem with a 2001, V-6 with 30,000. Vehicle engine would turn over all day and not start. Had to have it towed in. There was no prior problems with starting before this happened. They replaced the ignition module in it. No problem with it since. It has been over a year now. The ignition module has something to do with the anti-theft also If I remember. Was fortunate to have the 5 yr warranty still in effect. I think about $170 at GM for the part?
Good luck with your fix. Let us know what it turns out to be. |

Re: 01 alero won't start
Next time it does it listen for the fuel pump in the tank, They usually make a slight humm, If you dont hear it open the hood and tap on the fuel pump relay, or sswap it with a like relay and see if it starts, The realys are real cheap and are usually the problem before the pumps fail.

Re: 01 alero won't start
Thank you very much for the info. It ended up being the fuel pump and fuel filter. Got it back from mechanic and it is running, so I hope this is resolved.
