1997 suburban transmission

I've searched on this and did not see this exact issue. My wifes suburban will only drive in 2nd and 3rd gear. this happened today for the first time as well as the check engine light coming on. I took it to the parts store and the code was reading shift solenoid. i have never worked on auto tranny before, but i'm not afraid of it. Does anybody have any suggestions? The fluid was low, but not dirty. I've trying to find info on these and from what i can see you must pull the pan and filter to access these. It is a 4L60E

Thanks for your help
