Striped Distributor shaft???

NOt sure if i got the correct name of the part or not but, I hear a major ratting comming from around the distributor cap...the motor will run fine then idol will change and it will rattle and cause the motor to miss..while driving the motor will take spells and miss and backfire threw the carb....any ideas?? and how to fix it???

You did not say what year or engine but there were some distributor gear problems.

you didnt mention miles ill guess its over 100k on the 4.3 distributor is in rear of engine rught?? if your getting back fire back through carb valve timing is off have u checked the timing? check distributor cap/rotor

Set the engine on TDC compression no 1 cylinder.
Remove dist cap and check for up and down play and sideways play.
Then remove dist and check the dist gear and the pickup coil for being centered or lose.

If it is worn out a rebuilt dist is a good way to fix it.
