Procedure for shifting into Low Four Wheel Drive

Hello

I am heading up to a buddies shack this weekend, and I realized that I have never used my Low Four Wheel Drive before and I wanted to be sure that I understood how to shift into it when I head up there incase I would need it.

From what I understand from the manual is that you:

A. Shift into High 4
B. Be sure you are not going more than 3-4 mph
C. Shift Transmission into N
D. Shift Command Trac into N and then Low 4

If this is correct or not your advice would be great!
Kinda sad that I have never put my jeep into low before!

Yes, but:
  • I would go 1-2 mph from Transfer case N to 4 Lo
  • There will be a slight grind
  • Make sure you pull hard enough for it to engage all the way

Re: Procedure for shifting into Low Four Wheel Drive

If you need to go into 4 low you will probably be able to see the need for it before you get there so i would recommend completely stopping and putting the tranny in N and then shifting to 4 lo and make sure that the handle goes all the way back to completely shift into 4 lo otherwise it will slip out and go back to N. Unless you are having to go rock crawling to get to his shack you should only need 4 hi. If you're doing this I'm assuming and hoping that you have offroad tires that would actually make good use of the 4 wheel drive instead of just plain street tires which will slip alot and not get good grip in the mud.

Re: Procedure for shifting into Low Four Wheel Drive

I would agree with Dave. When I bought my 01 cherokee with 73k miles on it, I tested 4 low. I came to a complete stop, shifted the transmission to Neutral then I engaged the 4 low. It worked just fine.

GM's early "shift on the fly" circa 1980's worked the same way. .

Good Luck!

Re: Procedure for shifting into Low Four Wheel Drive

Hello All

Thank you for the info!! True, I am probably not going to use 4 low on the way up there, but it is good for me to know, winters in International Falls get pretty cruddy, I may need it.

Thank You!

Danols

Re: Procedure for shifting into Low Four Wheel Drive

Do as the manual says. Sometimes its easier to get into lo if you are moving ever so slowly. Give it a firm pull, a little grinding is ok, alot of grinding means you will most likely have to go back into "N" and start again. Practice before you need it. If the Jeep has'nt been in lo very much it may be a little tempermental.
