The engine is tight but I'd rather have a Gti. The jetta bodies are fruty looking. I like the A3 body style better than the new stuff. Drop the new engine in one of those and watch it fly if you can. HA!!!!

Thumbs down

The '02 1.8T will be a lot faster than the Jetta VR6. The VR6 is fast but the 1.8T is running 180hp and that turbo really makes a diff. I have a 1.8T and have raced the VR6 and sorry to say the VR6 lost.

Kinda doubt it.... My 24V VR6 puts out 201 hp and has alot more torque available than the turbo. I drove both when I bought my GLI and the VR6 had WAY more pull. The torque was always on, no waiting to spool-up. The 1.8T was fun to drive and it would be very easy to boost the output with the turbo but I didn't want to void any warranties.

I have not driven the GLI but I have seen them around as well as other VR6's and they don't seem as fast. I can only compare the 1.8T the BMW. I raced my Dad in my 1.8T against his '00 BMW 328i and we were both even.

Cool 1.8 vrs VR6

The new 1.8 obviously has more kick than the previous 150 HP, but the start up lag is still there and the torque with the VR6 is really strong even on the 174 HP model. The VR6 is faster off the line - but don't believe there would be a lot of difference to 100. You can modify each with the turbo getting the most in the end, but the higher the boost the less the engine life.
