13" tire size?

Hey everyone. As you all know I ordered new rims for my Geo. There's only one tire that is a 175/60R13, and that's the Falken ZE512. I noticed, however, my Geo currently has P155R12 tires on it, which are slightly larger than the stock P145R12 that it should have. If it comes to it, and I can no longer get the 175/60R13, then I might have to settle for the 175/70R13, and there are tons of those. I found out the difference between those and the 155R12s is that they are only .4 inches more in diameter, which isn't TOO bad. Any of you with Geos and 13" tires, do you have 175/70R13 tires?

I heard in the past that they are slightly big, but it doesn't sound like they're TOO big and you probably can't tell much of a difference, other than the speedometer being off by about 4mph at 65mph. So if your speedometer reads 65, you're really going 69 or so.

Let me know what you all think!

Re: 13" tire size?

Dan, next week I'll have a look at my geos with the 13" wheels and see what they've got on them. If any are running a 70 series tire with a width of 175, I'll take some pictures.

Re: 13" tire size?

Yeah I need to know ASAP. I was going to buy a set of tires from performanceplustire, but their website has been completely redone, so I dunno if they're still in business. I found some really good P175/70R13 Yokohama AVID T4 tires at Summit Racing for $48 each...I'm thinking about getting them. I mean other than my speedometer being off by 4mph or so, and my car sitting maybe another half to three quarters of an inch higher off the ground, they shouldn't have any problems right? Any rubbing or anything? Well let me know everyone. Thanks! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Re: 13" tire size?

My 2000 Metro uses 13" wheel - the stock size is 155/80R13. I have to say that I've never tried any other sizes.

Re: 13" tire size?

From visiting the swift forum, I came to the conclusion that I should go with either P185/60R13, or P175/60R13. I heard that both would work fine, just that the 185s are slightly wider. Their overall diameter match the P155/80R12s. Both sizes are available in Falken ZE512s. They're $46 and $48 each, which isn't bad at all.

Also I could go with P175/70R13 also, if I want the tires slightly taller, which would make the car slightly higher too. Many more selections for that size, about 16 selections or so. Only 2 selections for the other two sizes each.

Re: 13" tire size?

You can use the numbers to calculate the overall diameter of those tires you mentioned if you want to be sure. Here is a link on Tirerack.com showing how to do this.

Re: 13" tire size?

I made a somewhat final decision. Since I had such good luck with having the Falken ZE512 on my Ford Festiva when I converted over to 13" rims, I will stick with the same tires on my Geo Metro.

However, I still can't decide whether I want P175/60R13, or P185/60R13?

I need to know if the P185/60R13s will fit with no problems, no rubbing, if all would be OK if I use these.

Anyone if you know, please let me know! Thanks!

I do know that some of my 13" metros have 175mm wide tires on them. I can't imagine another centimeter in width (5mm per side additional width) would cause any rubbing.

Keep in mind though, that wider is not always better. It is so long as the wheel is within the recommended width for the width of the tire. Exceeding the specified tread width recommended for a given wheel width will not only degrade handling, but cause a wear pattern focused on the center of the tread. So - I don't know if this is an issue, just something to keep in mind. Goodluck Dan!! And post pics when you get 'er all together!

Re: 13" tire size?

Well the rims I got for it are 5.5 inches wide. The 185 tires need between 4.5 and 6 inches I believe, so they should be fine. Thanks for your input though!

Re: 13" tire size?

My 93 Swift has 175/70-13 tires which fit just fine. The wheel wells etc are the same as the Metro. I'm using Kumho tires which I really like, cost $40 each from Tirerack.

Re: 13" tire size?

I just ordered the Falken ZE512 P185/60R13 tires for $48 a piece from http://www.performanceplustire.com. Although my rims won't be in to Summit Racing until August 31st, but at least I know everything's ordered! I already also have Gorilla conical bulge lug nuts and Gorilla locking lug nuts on their way too, as well as short chrome valve stems.

Re: 13" tire size?

Well I just got a call from performanceplustire and they said the Falkens are no longer being made, so I guess I can't get 185/60R13. In that case, I will have to get P175/70R13s, probably the Yokohama AVID T4 tires. But that's alright. At least now I know it's not possible to get Falkens anymore, in either the P185/60R13, or the P175/60R13.
