1988 honda crx hf rear suspension
I have a 1988 Honda crx hf and im looking to
upgrade my rear suspension from drum to disk. My question is what I need to upgrade my master cylinder, my front brakes, and rear brakes. Also, my car did not come with a rear sway bar. How could I add one? If I upgrade my rear would I have to get new dampers and springs? One more thing my engine keeps knocking when cold I add higher octane to wear off any detonation. |

knocking can usually be fixed by adding higher octane fuel, sometimes by giving the engine a tuneup, and also sometimes by just adding denser oil... loss of compression is one of the many reasons for knocking in a cold engine.
Since you said something about adding higher octane, I'm assuming you mean that you're adding some sort of "octane booster"... bear heavily in mind that you're wasting your money. Octane booster will usually state that it provides "X points of octane enrichment." What this actually means, is this: Say your normal fuel of choice is 91 octane... and you add this X-brand octane booster, which has "5 points of octane enrichment"... the result would be this: Ob/10+FO=TO (Ob= Octane booster "points", FO=Fuel octane rating, TO=Total octane.) Ob(5)/10 = .5... .5+FO(91) = TO(91.5)... so your actual octane content would be 91.5... not 96 like you would think. If you read carefully, most of the companies that sell that crap actually explain it that way... this would be b/c they understand the reality of false advertisement claims. I'm pretty sure you can use the entire rear suspension and brake system from a DA series Integra, including the rear discs, hubs, everything. Should also be able to use the prop valve and master cylinder as well, afaik. |

If im not mistaken the 88 had different suspension geometry. I dont know if the parts will work, Im not saying they wont though. Just food for thought.

frodo, it's a pretty good chance that you're right... the 88 seems to be the "bastard child" so to speak of the 4th gen civic/2nd gen CRX production line.
W/o further research, I couldn't prove that left, right, down, or up, but the research on this topic isn't my job. |

I just know that it does have different mounting points for some of the pieces, which gave it an active caster which people sometimes refer to as "passive rear steering". I also know that spring and shocks fit 89-91...and not 88

yeah.......the front components on the 88 were pretty much the same as all other 4th gens...like frodo said the rear end is completely different..maybe you can just swap the hub and spindle w/o the trailing arm? Not sure on that one but just my 2 cents

So should I just sell it and find another crx. Or could I just get a lower control arm, disc brakes with the holes drilled into them for the sway bar. After I do all that, do I get and aftermarket dampers and spring kit made for the parts? Could I just go to passwordjdm or hmotorsonline for the parts and just bolt in? I understand im going have to drill in the frame rail for the sway bar. Is there any other modification I have to do for my 88 hf, so the whole rear end is like a si?
