1989 Cavalier-Where is the flasher unit?

I can't find the turn signal flasher unit on my 1989 Cavalier!

The conventional barrel-type one above the fuse box is the one for the four-ways only! There is no other one next to it!

Everyone tells me it's by the steering column, and there is NOTHING like a flasher unit anywhere near the steering column... only wiring that runs along it. Is it hidden WAY up in the dash somewhere, and if so, WHY?!!!

Re: 1989 Cavalier-Where is the flasher unit?

Turn signal flasher - "Front seating area, driver side, under dash, driver side of steering column, mounted on support bracket"

Hazard flasher - "Front seating area, driver side, under dash, driver side of steering column, behind instrument cluster, mounted in convenience center"

That's the info from Autozone's website.

I have read all of these things on other sites. All BS on this particular car... I found it after screwing around in the dark by using the courtesy light as a search bulb. It was mounted on a clip under the dash in a completely unreachable spot just to the left of the ashtray (if you were facing the dash) It required disassembly of three plastic sections under the dash, and STILL required bloodied fingers to get it loose! I reattached the new one and left it hanging loose... there was NO way it was going to go back in the clip without further major diassembly.

This car does not appear to be modified in any way.... just a crappy old four-banger I bought from an old lady.

If you can't find the flasher unit in your Cavalier in the 'prescribed' locations, take note of this.

This unit SHOULD be in the same location as the one for the four-ways!!! WTF?! Another example of an UNACCEPTABLE design flaw.
