Angry My 99 PissPoor

i am having alot of trouble with starting the Passport. Sometimes when I turn the key it acts like the starter is done. It will click one time, and then nothing happens. At the same time the fuel pump whines more than usuall. If I remove the key and start the process over again sometimes it will start and sometimes it will repeat not starting. I asked a few of my techs which claim to be mechanics and they think that it could be the starter switch. I was curious if anyone has had a problem similar to this. The fuel pump, intake gaskets, plugs, and battery have been replaced. Also when I shift the transmission into the lower gears it lights up in reverse. I think this damn thing is possesed. Need help bad. Dont feel like getting nickle and dimed.

Re: My 99 PissPoor

Your shift light issue is due to a dirty range sensor. See the FAQ's on how to clean it.

Next i would clean up the battery posts and the spots where the battery grounds to the bad. Isuzu's will do funky things with weak electrical systems.

How many miles to do have on the truck?

If your electrical system is fine and you have over 120k on the starter then you probably need a new starter (if you have 4x4 the exhaust needs to be dropped to replace it).

You'll find lots of help on this board.

Re: My 99 PissPoor

x2

When my starter went bad it did pretty much the same thing. Cept it wouldnt work at all again when it decided to go. Other have been able to coax it into working again sometimes. When I would turn to start everything would go off, would have to turn it all the way off again before it came back. Started fine when I left for work, completly dead when I went to got home. It also did exactly the same thing a few months later and turned out to be a loose and corroded negative cable on the battery.

Re: My 99 PissPoor

Also check the ground from the negative post of the battery at the motor. Even if it looks good and tight, take it off and clean it with a dremel. This is where my problem was. The lights and accessories on my 98 rodeo are grounded at the frame and I had full power but no start. The motor has to be grounded for the starter to be grounded.

Re: My 99 PissPoor

I'd bet real money that the starter solenoid contacts are bad. You can buy a contact repair kit but going through the hassle of the getting the starter out, you'd just want to replace the whole thing, unless you're really strapped for cash.
