Re: what the best way to go?

i didn't know you're in TX! i'm in Dallas. you should definitely come to the 5th Annual TX 3S Gathering, held in Dallas August 17-19. you could ride in a few VR4s and maybe a few FWD TT cars. best way to learn is to be around what you're interested in.

i won't say either way whether you should get a VR4 or do the TT conversion. it all depends on what you want. pros and cons for both. but the maintenance on a VR4 is definitely more involved, more expensive, and more of a pain in the ass....and this is coming from a guy (me) who has owned an NA for 4 years, but i've also done a LOT of work on VR4s.

if you decided to get a VR4, the hardest part will be finding one that has been maintained well, and then that car will cost a pretty penny. you can find a cheap one, but be prepared to spend $1k up front on maintenance/repairs. if you do the work yourself, you could save a lot of money, otherwise you better start saving.

hopefully Igovert500, YoungVR4, and some other VR4 owners will chime in.

Re: what the best way to go?

you can just show up and cruise. however, it would be helpful if you did sign up, or at least contact the guy in charge (DuTTch). 3Si now accepts free web email addresses, so signing up on 3Si should be easy.

Re: what the best way to go?

kickass. another possible drinkin buddy in TX

not tryin to get OT, but im moving near san antonio is a couple months. gotta make some friends.

back on topic. If your mechanically enclined and plan on doing all the work yourself, hell, just do the TT conversion. nothin wrong with a little torque steer lol. I dont know if your ATX or MTX, but i guess, if i remember what hotshot said, ATX will need a few add-ons to deal with the power.

If your not mechanically enclined and dont wanna be bothered to do the work, id prolly steer you away from a VR4 anyways...they are definitely higher mainenence...but i guess thats the price you pay for boost.

oh boy.

well see, you don't HAVE to get a TT motor. the point of the TT CONVERSION is to slap on some turbos and covert your NA motor to TT. the stock turbo setup and just about everything from a VR4/RT-TT wil fit onto the NA engines.

the stock TT motors have an 8:1 compression ratio within the combustion chamber. the stock NA motors have a 10:1 CR. with the stock 9B turbos on your 10:1 NA motor, the turbos will be fully spooled at about 3k rpms, compared to the TT motors which spool later in the rpm band.

however, with a 10:1 turbo engine, there is a very fine line for tuning. with the 8:1 CR, there is more leeway for tuning.

now time for you to do a search.

check out www.bobthegreat.com for some nice pictures on the TT conversion.

Re: what the best way to go?

yea, definitely not worth it to do a whole engine swap IMO. I recall someone not long ago getting all the conversion stuff for like 1200 bucks. Granted, it was higher mileage stuff, but a TT conv none the less.

good luck with it and keep us updated on your progress man.
