Question 97 Lumina Radio Locked

Any Ideas on how to get the code to unlock the radio? I do not have an owners manual and the last time this happened I went to a dealership and paid 40 to have it reset.

I am trying to save my money this time. I called the dealership and they said I would have to pay again to reset the radio.

Thanks

Re: 97 Lumina Radio Locked

I used to have a way to do it...but the dealer code I used has been changed...

It's an involved process, you have to call in to the 800 number, enter a dealer code, it tells you to push certain buttons on the unit in sequence, which in turn causes some identifying numbers to be displayed on the unit, you enter those numbers into the phone keypad, and the system gives you a final unlock code sequence to enter...they've got it all figured out so you are helpless without a dealer code...takes all of five minutes to do it, good money maker for them.

I know I've seen the procedure on here with other dealer codes, use the search function for "radio unlock code" or whatever in the GM forums and you'll probably find one that works...

Re: 97 Lumina Radio Locked

I seen on another website where it says to hold in the hour button the hold in the minute button to the numbers. Did you ever hear of that by any chance.

I am just a little upset that the same dealer I used a couple years ago and told me that they will keep the code for me and reprogram at no charge is now wanting to charge me....

Re: 97 Lumina Radio Locked

Yeah there is a shortcut if you already have the code, but in your case, it's a two step process, the system you call into is to recall the code.

If you have the code, you can just put it in the mode to accept it (what you are talking about), enter the numbers when prompted by the display, and it's set. But that won't help you in this case.

Did you look in your manual and see if they might have written it in the back or anything? That's where I wrote mine down as I was doing it.

Smile Re: 97 Lumina Radio Locked

I did the search as you suggested and I found the steps to unlock it (getting the numbers, calling and then getting the code) and it worked....runaround

I printed them and will keep them in a safe place. It took me maybe 5 minutes.

Thanks again

Wow, my memory of how it works is a little mixed up, I just looked at it again...it's been about 5 years since I used the procedure...but glad you got it working.

I need to replace some light bulbs in mine. If I remove it do I need to do all this work on codes? Is there a wy to get them before removing the radio?

Yes you will, and that's a good question...don't know if you can get it to display security code while still unlocked and powered, but I bet you can...I just don't know how..somebody?

This site shows you the procedure to disable it permanetly (hold down three buttons) and then you don't have to worry about it.
