Question Importing a Primera

Do I have a chance to import a European Nissan Primera 1.6 SLX to the USA and if so, does anyone know what I got to do?

Thanks in advance!

Well, import cost is zero, since it comes as my private property and freight I have to pay for my other stuff anyway.

I would like to know if I have to expect difficulties getting this car "confirmed" or if it is compliant to all the laws and rules already.

You in the military? I have heard of people in the military, that are stationed overseas. Who then purchase a car over there. Then when they move back, I believe the Government picks up the tab.

Nope, not in military, but in love with an American woman and moving over to her. Does this count, too?

And does anyone of you know an official website where I can look up info about this and/or ask?

I think you'll find the cost rather prohibitive. For one thing, you will have to post a bond equal to the value of the car when it hits these shores. You get this back when the car meets government regulations.

If you are a foreign national, I believe you can bring your personal car here for a period of time without having to do any compliance work. I would be surprised if there isn't a time limit on this.

Thanks for the replies/help. I think I have found a way now to just have to pay for the shipping costs.

Since it is a Primera I doubt that you would have to do anything to make it meet emissions requirements or saftey requirements. I doubt that Nissan spent alot of money making the Primera compliant to US saftey standards. (By this I mean that the car was originally designed to meet US crash standards.) Although the 1.6L may not meet US emissions, I don't think it would be hard to make it meet US emissions.

It's not so much the emission and safety standards I am "afraid" of, to which my car wouldn't comply. After all it fulfills the emission standards of the EU for the year 2002 and would be 9 years old by then. Additionally these are stricter than the US ones, so I hear.

It's more that there doesn't seem to be a governmental office somewhere which would say my car is compliant. It all depends on private import garages which will surely charge a lot from me, so I would have it on PAPER that my car fulfills all the requirements.

I might be wrong here, and if so, I'd be happy about every input.

You should be able to handle compliance yourself. However, it will be an involved process that will be time consuming. It may be attractive to let someone else handle it.

OTOH, you can upgrade to a SR20DE powered G20 when you get here.
