Stock Stereo Watts Rating?

I have just replaced the front door and rear speakers on my 97 marquis, I have the cassette player original stock radio for this car in place, the speakers make a difference, but I wanted to know what the watts rating of the stock radio is, considering adding a new head unit radio something that is 20 watts RMS / 50 watts max, just wondering how much more of a punch it would be with my new speakers vs the stock radios output power.

Unless you have the Premium Sound System (that came with an additional amp) you will really notice the difference. I like ALPINE units and have installed them in '93 GM and '87 GMs. I'll be putting one in an '87 Topaz next week and I know you will notice the difference! MB

Re: Stock Stereo Watts Rating?

Humm how do i tell if I have the stock or premium stock radio?

either way i am 95% sure i am swapping the head unit out and will hope for a bit more punch from it at 20 watts rms...(hoping my stock is more like 6 to 12 watts rms).

My stock unit in this 97 marquis has a cassette player and 6 preset stereo buttons, nothing much else, bass treble, on off etc.

Amp in trunk = Premium Sound System. No Amp means non premium system. MB

Re: Stock Stereo Watts Rating?

I have replaced head units on all three of the GMs i have owned because althought the speakers are nice I found the head units to be awfull. I just recently put in a generic 180 watt unit i got from walmart (2nd one of similar design) for under $80 and there was such a difference that i trashed the stock radio. I dont listen to music VERY loud but even as far as I have pushed the radio on any Grand Marquis I have never blown a speaker.
