Tranny Problem?

I drive a 1996 eclipse gsx manual with about 82800 miles on it.

Recently i experienced a problem when driving. i was driving on a highway going to my house when i heard a clicking noise coming from outside of my car i didn't think anything of it. when i got off of the highway i went to down shift into 3rd to come to a stop sign when i heard a clunking sound and also when i down shifted into 2nd. when i came to a stop it was hard to put it into 1st and when it finally did go it went with a click and a clunk. when i tried to get going again the car wouldn't go but when it finally did get going it was very rough until it the noises get worse and i had to pull off because the car stopped moving. i got out and looked underneath and saw white smoke coming from around the transmission.

any ideas on what the problem could be? clutch new transmission, cv joint

Re: Tranny Problem?

uh oh........you better hope it wasn't coming from your crank. You could have screwed up you bearings and your pistons could have been tapping the head. Hopefully it was a small transmission problem.

Re: Tranny Problem?

i think you would know if it was your clutch by the strong odor it creates when burnt up, at least from my expierence

Re: Tranny Problem?

This one is not going to be obvious over the internet, but I'm thinking the clutch is the most likely source of this problem. There is nothing else in the tranny that would smoke, for one. It should also be able to explain all of your other symptoms as well.

This is unlikely enough to say that it's probably not possible, and certainly not the problem in this case.

Re: Tranny Problem?

i took the car to a mechanic to see if he could help me figure out what it was doing before and when i did we took it for a drive and it ran fine with no problem at all. I took it to work that evening and about half way there it did the same thing it would not want to go then just shake violently when i camew to a complete stop and put it in first gear. my dad drove out and switched me cars and on the way home he said it made a loud bang but that was it. the car never stopped moving or anything he drove it home and it hasn't done anything since that was about 2 weeks ago untl tonight.
i was driving home from work when i had the air conditioning on and my car sounded like it was dragging something underneath it. i got out and checked under the car and i even made sure all had all the belts still on everything seemed fine. i got the car home but it is still making the sound as if something plastic were being dragged along. it will do it when the clutch is pushed all the way in or when i am touching nothing and when i am giving it gas to go up a hill.

one possible solution is that a u joint from the trasnfercase to the driveshaft is going right now thats the only thing that i can think of.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tranny Problem?

have you changed the fluid recently...if not I would drain it and see if you have any teeth coming out or anything else...there should be some glitter in there but no big chunks....and its a good idea to do anyway if you dont know when the last time you did it was...
